this bloke is a right on bloke, and has had his surf for 13 yrs, and loves his surf ,i've given him the web site address for which he did't know, so behave yourselfs if you disagree

i do tend to agree, but he also does a fair amount of 4x4ing over there and also owns a 1976 willies jeep with a 5l v8 lump and the biggest set of tyres on it i've ever seen, the pic of the surf he had on his laptop showed he had general grabbers around the 31'' mark.

All down to the weight factor and size of the "footprint". I think surfs are on par with any other 4x4 in the same weight catagory. Suzi jeeps and fibreglass beach buggy`s are tremendous in the sand!

                              Hilux's and Sand

                              Hey guys,

I'm an old mate of Clayton's and I now live in Australia. Owned a Hilux before I left for out here, and now I've got a 4.2 diesel LandCruiser ute. The thing about Hilux's and sand is that Hilux's are top heavy when compared with Land Cruisers. I'm in Western Queensland - near the Northern Territory and hence a long way from the coast in any direction. Lots of sand. All the guys from town call Hilux's Roll-uxes because the effect sand has if you're travelling quickly and you hit a soft patch. Most road deaths in Australia are from people who leave the road and flip their car on the soft sand on the side.

Other than that, I reckon Hilux's are just as good as any other off road car of choice (I got a landcruiser because the Mine uses them, and if you had access to free spares of ANY part, you'd take it too eh?). So don't be too worried. The main thing is that petrol's aren't as good as diesel in sand because the torque curve of the engine and the way the engines make power means you burn more fuel in a petrol on long sand drives (about 40% more). Not an issue back in the UK, but out here, it can be a life or death thing - I've got 140l of diesel tanks on my cruiser, so I'm not too phased by it!

                              That's my tuppence, anyways!

                              Cheers,

                              Treeve
