  • What's the law on bumpers?

    Hello

I've completely removed my rear bumper - instant visual lift LMAO.

Anyway, what does the law say I must (or not) have as a rear bumper?

I have temporarily reconnected a fog light (perfect target for Run to the Hills).

Sorry no piccies yet - will post some tomorrow.

EDIT - Just found this pic elsewhere on the site - mine looks just like it

I have had no rear bumper for 2 years or so . Passed all MOT's like it . Would not be much use if I did have one as anyone hitting the back would be kissing my diff due to the lift .

That sounds like a Chillie Peppers song!

I was thinking there might not be a regulation - as all cars/vans/ etc all have different designs.

It's ok as long as you don't have any brackets sticking out

Hold up...where's the exhaust on that truck? Normally Surf's/4Runners look a bit odd with the standard exhaust hanging down with no bumper....

I thought the exhaust had to extend outside the bodyline, my mate just failed an mot coz his didn't. Dunno what the actual wording on the refusal sheet was, but his exhaust finished just past the rear axle

Hi-lux Pickups don't have a rear bumper as standand, so it must be ok.

Maybe if its a low slung sports car... but what about white van man or another big 4x4....

I'd feel safer with a good strong tube bumper.

From an mot point of view removing the bumpers is ok as long as there are no sharp projections likely to injure other road users or pedestrians.i dont think theres anything about exhausts extending out the bodyline, a lot of newer cars/kit cars have the exhausts just under the rear facing down, and some cars have em along the sides under the doors,as long as it aint (too)noisy or insecure and they can put the emissions probe up it i cant see why they would fail it.

Don't know what the silencer was from 'cos I fished it out of a skip at a scr ap metal yard. (T'was like new!) It's a straight through type that I welded the flanges onto that I cut off the old silencer, binned the old frayed flexy section and bolted it all together using the original mountings/hangers..
