  • Hi I’m new just some questions

Hi I’m new on here just thought I would introduce my self I’m from western Australia, Perth I don’t have a Hilux surf but hopefully later on this year I will

I’ve been looking around for awhile and was thinking about getting a Hilux dual cab ute 5 speed man 2.8ltr diesel but I really want a wagon and my mate told me about the Hilux surf so I looked them up and I recon they look sweet plus there turbo diesel which Is even beta

i was looking to get a early 90’s hilux surf probly a 2.4ltr turbo diesel I want a manual but they seem to be more auto’s around which wouldn’t be bad on those days when you can’t really be stuffed driving any way.

I just want to know how do the auto surfs go off road are they a lot more gutless and have less off road ability.?
And how do they compare to the manual surfs? (I’m guess manual)
which is beta for off road and what other options are there in engine wise

Thanks in advance for any help

hi shadow welcome to the looney bin.
im new to offroading also but the guys/gals on here will give you good advise n also youll find it like a extended family as they all try to help each other.
i got a 2.4L turbo diesel n i like it alot but wish now i got a 3L as im told it doesnt use alot more fuel than what the 2.4 does.
some will say manual better while others will say auto better.
only thing i find with my 2.4 is it becomes a bit slow on hills on the road but off road i dont find a problem with it.
wish i had come here first then i would have got a 3L for sure

My 2.4 it great off road. I have bought some mud tyres which give great grip off road.

Get a 3L manual for your own off-road use and get a 3L auto if you let other's drive it!

My 3L manual has been in Africa for 3 years now and dry off-roading is similar to Oz - the wet off-roading is like the worst northern english claypit x 10! But she does fine - loads of grunt!

Yep they natively drive in 2wd (rear). You'll need to engage the 4wd for it to work, though you should only do this on slippy stuff (e.g. sand, snow)

welcome, they're all sweet off road. I've never found my 2.4 struggling for power off road although sometimes I would prefer a little more on the road. They're good solid motors, comfortable in the front, the rear seats aren't the most comfortble in the world, but hey, i sit in the front when i'm driving.

A few videos of them off road:-

i looked over some stuff and now i want the 3ltr TD manual if i can find one but if i cant find one i'll have to get the auto 3ltr TD

2.4TD only have that much torque
                            Horse Power: 86 @ 4000
                            Torque Output: 139 ft/lbs @ 2200

                            with the 3.0TD having
                            Horse Power: 85 kW @ 3600
                            Torque Output: 315 ft/lbs @ 2000

i don’t really know much about 4WDing but i guess the more torque you have the easier you can get over and go through stuff is that right ?

I think that torque figure for the 3.0 is overstated by about 100 lb.ft but you're right, more torque is always better as long as you have the grip to use it. I think 85kw is about 125hp, for comparison against the 2.4
