    Good Day!

I have a newly purchased 1990 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-limited, On my 4wd lever knob, there's only L4 and H, how do I shift from 4wd to just 2wd mode?
However, there is a switch on the side of the lever, does if I depress the 4wd switch on the side of the lever, I'm now on the 2wd mode?

    Thanks.

    Welcome Ronimonton

I have a 91 SSR-X Auto box.. when i first tried mine i could not get it out of 4 wheel drive, I pushed the Button in, reversed about 5 feet and it went into 2 W/D, I have got a GREEN 4W/D sign that comes up on the display on the right hand side of the dash to tell me when its in 4W/D.
I hope this is some use to you, Also if you dont already know, the jack handle/spare wheel realese bar is under the rear seat...
    Good Luck

      Hi Roni...

The switch on the 4WD lever changes you from 4H to 2wd. There should be a green 4WD symbol light up on the dash board when the lever is in the H position and the switch depressed (you are in 4WD). When you release the switch the light should go out indicating 2wd.

For L4, put gear lever into Neutral, move 4WD selector from H to L4, select gear and drive away.

We also have a SSR-Limited (1989) and the switch on the 4WD selector gets stuck - you have to prise it out with a 20p coin!!

      Enjoy!!

Mines currently in the neutral position with the button un pressed with no light on........does this mean I'm in 2wd......or should I have it in H with the button unpressed to get better fuel economy......

              You are kidding aren't you?.
With the transfer in Neutral you ain't going anywhere, button pressed or unpressed as the transfer case is in neutral so all drive to the wheels is disconnected.

Normal driving - Lever in H, button unpressed (light on dash out). This is 2WD H mode.

Slippery conditions only - button pressed, light on on the dash. This is 4WD H and must not be used on tarmac except in snow and ice as you will damage the gearbox / drivetrain.

Off road really serious - transfer lever forward in 4L position. The button can be pressed or not, doesn't matter as the transfer lever automatically puts it in 4WD when in 4L postion. Put the gearbox in 2 for best possible results.

You can select the 4WD button while driving anywhere up to 60kph however the transfer lever should only be moved when stationary and in Neutral on the gearbox.

              Cheers
