I'm getting new surf (what to check out?)

I'm finally going to become a proper member of this club, because next week i'm picking up my new (to me) '93 K reg, blue surf . If my colour choice is debated, that's fine, but at the same time, could anyone give me pointers on things I should make sure of -besides the obvious 'engine running well', 'looks ok!' stuff? Such as I read somewhere about a tool set that's meant to come with it and where is it etc? Any info on specialist stuff like that would be helpful.

Take it for a GOOD test drive, at least 30mins to 1 hour,(i its from a garage they won't mind) and get it good and warm.

Check everything is working incl. a/c and do an emergency stop, to test brakes.

Check the 4wd works and check all fluid levels.

You should find a tool roll in one of the lockers located in the side panels of the boot and the jack should be located under the back seat. As for the rest, well, make sure that the 4wd engages and disengages ( will no doubt make a bit of a clunk). Have a look at the water level,and keep an eye on it. Usual stuff like clean oil and no gunge under the oil filler cap. If it's an auto check the ATF (with the engine running) should be a nice red colour. When I first got mine it made a hell of a noise when I moved it on full lock. Don't worry They all do it, just slap some grease on the steering stops. Next and most important look at yourself in the mirror, you should be wearing a big grin good luck and enjoy.

Thanks Spoggle. I don't know about the rest, but I anticipate the 'big grin' is present with the vehicle! I take it if i'm on tarmac I engage the 4wd, listen for a clunk to know it's cool, and go back to 2wd? Heard that 4wd and tarmac don't mix!??!?!! Thanks for the advice, i'll make a list and get the dealer sweating before I no doubt drive it home -he seems quite confident.

Cheers! He already told me the a/c doesn't work, but I've seen a bunch without it anyway and wasn't really bothered about it -got £100 knocked off for it. Figured I could get it done if I one day decide I want it. That good going, or do I need to rethink?

HA! Good point! It's a 2.4 td, SSRx (that it? so that means it's not a 4runner, right?) Automatic. Don't know anything else, oh...it's BLUE!

Hi Chris and welcome

you can engage 4wd on tarmac, just don't drive it on there for long - I can't imagine the guy from the garage will be too happy to go offroad for the test drive.

Look for leaks too - top and middle hose of the rad, check the expansion tank for gunge, oil cap off and look for mayo.....

otherwise, have a laugh - and my grin is 13 months old and still going strong..

Thanks marky. I'll print out and take it with me. I guess most of these can be replaced if they're missing, can't they? No need to make too much of a fuss? My dad owns a couple of classic cars with specialist tools, and i'm worried about missing out on those. I guess I could buy from this site though...!
