Ok I have checked all the vacume pipes and replaced any suspect ones.but still 4wd will not engage. if i get under the truck when the button is pressed i can hear the elec motor kick in ive tried moving the truck back and forth still no 4wd. if i press the button when moving the vibration seems to increase like something is trying to engage but cant!! as soon as the button is off the vibration stops!! Is there or does anyone know of a good 4wd specialist in the birmingham or surrounding area i could take the surf to get it sorted!

Ok, a couple of points:

Is it manual or automatic gearbox?

Does the 4WD symbol light up on the dash?

With the engine switched off and the gearbox in Park (auto) or in gear (manual) and 2WD selected, does the front prop turn round freely?

If the answer is YES it could be that the ADD system is not engaging and locking the front diff, drive-shafts and front prop-shaft together when you engage 4WD.

You should have a vacuum pipe with a blue stripe around it’s neck fastened to the blue vac solenoid (lower pipe going down towards the front diff) if you take this pipe off and attach a big syringe (I used a 50ml one) to the pipe and pull the plunger (creating a vacuum) and then look to see if the ADD has engaged by trying to turn the front prop (still in 2WD).

If the front prop has now locked, try it in 4WD and see what happens now?

It could be the ADD relay at fault or one of the solenoids.

Either way I found you can engage/disengage the ADD by putting a syringe on to the blue or brown vac pipe.

The front prop should be free when in 2WD to prevent wear in the front drive train.

Its and auto box. So i had a lttle play around with the vac pipes I was giving the two from the diff a good sucking and i got the 4wd light on! first time so i connected all the pipes back together and all was well, the 4wd light was working and the prop was turning. I thought it must have been a blocked pipe or something i drove off up the road not above 40 and it seemed ok Big smile on my face back home later went on a longer run with 4wd off and it felt like front drive was engaged i stoped and thesed the 4wd button a few times and nothing!! again no light and no
4wd the vibration did stop but again no 4wd!!

NB, you should not be driving in 4WD on tarmac with a 2nd gen. Surf.

Whooooooow the 4wd now seems to be all working it looks like It was the vac pipes after all that!!! we will see but for now i`m happy thanks for all the help with the diagrams etc.
