nice bull bar with the little wrapround bits, very useful for protectin the truck offroad, and opening gates, and sitting on when you workin under the engine bay, etc etc etc,
I reckon it's only thanks to these bars that i've still got arch extensions and mirrors on both sides of my truck, sunday was a good day
ideally i'd have a loadbearing hinged bar like bearmach do for landies for lugging gear about offroad sometimes, but they aren't wrapround, may do something when i get round to building a winch bumper.
Your missing out. In these areas we have coos, ponies, deer, badgers, foxes, pigs, and on one of my regular routes a very suicidal cat. If I didn't have the A bar where would I put all the lights I use to spot these hazards.
To the point of the thread, I like Surfs with full wrap round bull bars, A bars, and unadorned frontage.
would like to get bars for mine, nice set of stainless full wrap around bars. Got rid of my grey bumpers and replaced them for chrome. Looks a little odd as they're from a pre-facelift 2nd gen. At first I thought this thread was about bars and other places to go drinking lol

Like nero says handy for sitting on when working on the engine.
I once hit a deer (and not the "old deer" variety) in my Fraud escort...... What a bl00dy mess
Which was nothing compared to the mess my dear old departed dad did with his peugoet somthingorother after a tangle with a "large adult stag" (which ran off without exchanging his details )
I know a lot of people seem to hate bull bars because they are supposedly dangerous and kill people….
But it is not the bars that are dangerous, it is driving too fast… that is what kills.
When I was a teenager a neighbours young daughter was ran down in my street and killed… seeing her dead body being lifted into an ambulance left a lasting impression and a lesson why it is so important to drive slowly & carefully in residential areas.
If someone walks out in front of you on the open road while your doing 50 – 60 mph it will not make much difference to them as to whether you have a bull bar fitted or not, as they’ll be dead anyway.
I do have a bull bar fitted to mine and I do like the look of them. I find it helps me to judge the front of my Surf better (from the driving seat). It also lets me see when I have my headlights on as it becomes daylight (I can see light reflecting from the chrome bars).
Some people say that they intimidate other drivers…… well I certainly hope they do!If they stop some other driver from pulling out in front of me or cutting me up then that is fine by me.
“Ahhh, but you could seriously injure someone driving a little car” …….. Well so long as any accident is not my fault…. If they ran head-on into me in their small environmentally friendly, plastic, flimsy, cheap car… it would be “tough luck”…. you should have thought a bit more about personal safety if you want to drive like an idiot and get away with it.
Ok, so the front of my Surf has some protection… what about the rear? Do I fit a good strong tow bar….. or….. what about a pair of sturdy spikes sticking out from under the rear bumper? I’d paint them day glow orange just to give the tail-gaters chance to see them… before a suddenly brake.
Joking aside, I had a large NATO hitch on the back of my Landrover…. A BMW ran into the back of me at the traffic lights, resulting in smashed up front of BMW and a small tear in one of my mudflaps.
I think the bottom line is that if you choose to have bars fitted (or drive a big 4x4) then you need to drive in a responsible manner.
If you hit someone with a bullbar on the front of your car you are more likely to kill or injure them than if you hit them without the bar at the same speed.
Bars don't crumple like bonnets, bumpers and grilles and they focus all the force into a much smaller area than a bumper does.
I have no objection to people having bull bars and they do have a legitimate purpose for offroading or in areas with livestock, but I live in the middle of London and the only thing mine would ever get used for is killing a child who had stepped out without looking, even at low speed.
I know exactly what you are saying…. That is why I take extra care when driving in built-up areas…. I’m always on the lookout for children because I know that they don’t always look before running out into the road. There are very few children in my avenue and they are not usually around when I travel to & from work.
I mainly drive on country roads and A-roads. It is only the last mile as I enter the city that is built up….
I am far more likely to encounter an adult walking out into the road without looking. And they should know better than to be so stupid! If I took the Bull bar off just to protect silly pedestrians from hurting themselves, are they going to pay for any damage they cause to my Surf’s grill & bonnet? Somehow I don’t think so….
Oh and what about the damage to the rear of my Surf when I get rear-ended because I’ve had to stop quickly.
