  • problems BIG or small???

Ok I got my new surf on friday and today was my first off soad experiment is all went well in that I did not end up dead us upside down!!

My first problem is the 4wd light does not come on when I push the button in i can feel something engage but the light does not come on! also only the back wheels spin when in the mud!! I guess this means 4wd is not engaging! is this a gearbox problem or could it be something else??? what could i try

The second problem i have is once i had cleaned all the mud and drove it home there was steam and water coming from the water tank overflow on the pasenger side of the rad. could this be a head problem?? the needle did not go in to the red!

Whats the next steps to try???

oh its a 1992 surf 2.4td it had a new head about 12k miles ago! so im told by the guy i got it from!

    thanks!

i bet you have a vac pipe off.do a search for 4wd not working and you will find a diagram there so you can check all the vac pipes.
Or try going to/fro a few feet while 4wd is engaged

Ok bare with me on this i`m new to this!! if i put the 4wd gear lever to nuteral and then press the 4wd button the light on the dash comes on. if i then try to select H or L the light goes out!! i`ve tried to drive back and forwards but the light does not come back on with the grear lever in H or L!! could this still be a vacum problem?? and is this the correct way to engage the 4wd system?? should the overdrive button be on of off??? could i get any more confused?

you dont need to put the 4wd lever in neutral to press the button.you can press the button while on the move (but slowly). keep the h/l lever in high and then try the button and move to/fro a few meters and see what happens

take a look at the diagram on this thread and check the vac pipes. The one coloured red and also the ones on the laft side of the diagram around the T piece

Have a look at this site and download the owners manual – glove box guide.
Instructions for using gears/4 wheel drive starts on page 43.

            http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/downloads.htm

            Hope this helps.
