Because then you are dictating who services your car, where I personally would rather service my own vehicle, also a lot of garages would fleese people, saying things need doing that dont just to make more money

good point. when the wife has taken the car in they tried to fleese her, she had the good sense to call me and i went to the garage they changed thier tune when i got there.

Plus Emissions! How many cars are out driving, That when the MOT is due will fail on that! Theres too much at stake to say MOT's are worth doing away with! Plus think of all the buisnesses that will go bust! Ok there might be some garages that some people think overcharge but what about the ones that are fair and decent! No offense mate! an congrats on your surf sailing though but just because it has is not a basis to gather a group of people to say get rid of it! I for one am happy when the MOT is done! It means your car "should" be safe for using for another year! There are people who can service there own cars an good for them! saves a few quid! But what about the people who cant do it! an just dont understand what to do! how things work etc! as previously mentioned they would be taken to town on costs!

i work for a national mot testing/ servicing companyand yes im an mot tester personally i think if we did away with the mot or made it once every two years as the govt are talking about, there would be more accidents and certainly more fatalities then at present.. i can see it from both sides, true an mot is only valid on the day it was issued(although you can appeal against a decision 28 days later for mechanical and 3 months for corrosion related problems)but with the advisory notes also with the mot it helps show up any future problems that may require sorting out, either soon or before the next mot.
also as mentioned before not everyone is mechanically minded and can understand/fix these problems (if they know they have them!)
another point to mention that a service and mot are totally different and some items in one garages services will be different to anothers,i see far too many people who mistake an mot as a service when all the mot is in reality is a very very basic safety check to see if the vehicle conforms to MINiMUM safety standards!!
it makes me laugh when a boy/girl racer comes in with their chrome wheels,ali handbrake cover and gear knob,uv neon undervehicle lighting system , 4000 watts stereo with an amp so big it fills the boot and back seats up,then complains cos they cant afford a new track rod end because this one is about to seperate after the next roundabout!
i aggree though the system can be open to abuse and finding a reliable honest garage can be llike finding gold plated rocking horse droppings!!
so to sum it all up i reckon we should have four mots a year and charge £100 a time so i can get a pay rise
