  • Power gains from 3.0

OK, this has been done before, but after losing out (not by that much!) in a traffic light drag race with a Saab today, I feel the need for a bit more urge

I am sceptical about bobbox because no-one has come up with convincing explanations of how it manages to be all things at once.

I haven't heard of anyone reprogramming this ECU in any meaningful way, though I am assuming the simplest route to more power with this engine is via boost!

Anyone here made any serious gains from the 3.0 via repeatable mods which dont rely on a liberal dose of 'tooth fairy'?

I envisage the following might help :-

Intercooler combined with a couple of pounds more boost - by remapping ECU? Is there anyone who does this? What is the safe max for this engine - I dont want to screw the reliability with mega-psi levels? Followed by less restrictive exhaust (how restrictive is the standard exhaust though?)

Anyone want to start the ball rolling with personal experience?

I got away first as I had my left foot on the brake. It was smoking a fair bit, and I got ahead as he changed gear

I guess he may have done the austin maxi 1100 engine swap

Ive got a free flowing stainless steel exhaust and although im only a 2.4 geezer it makes it a $HIT load more responsive!! stick on an intercooler and your going to be laughing.

check out Ebay.com for remapping chips i swear they had some 3.0 turbo diesel ones in there!!! plus they were cheap as "fries"

The cheap 'chips' on eBay are generally resistors (about 3p from Maplin) strapped somewhere to fool the engine into thinking the air is either cooler, or there's more of it, so you overfuel (on a diesel) or lean out (on a petrol).

Not ideal! I'm looking for people who've done a proper job.

                Now that is funny!

I often find I rate cars that fly past me by saying 'umph, can you go up mountains etc?'

                    Sounds like an idea...

3.0 turbo is down the bottom. Ally pipe might be better than rubber hose?

You already know the answers to your question. With regards to the ECU, only a specialist is going to be able to do that. Not a cheap mod, but the only way to get any provable and useful benefit. Everything else is mechanical or fuel related. In rough order of cost/benefit.

                      Free flow exhaust.
Higher boost, about 15 psi max, if I remember correctly.
                      Intercooler.
                      LPG fumigation.
                      Water injection.
                      Electric fan instead of viscous.

How do you achieve the higher boost?

Awesome thread - CALM DOWN = esp. Liverpudlians!

Intercoolers have secondary benefits - but that would just be telling

Especially all the 3rd Gens who would gain so much............
