  • Ball breaker help

Changing the track rods (among other things) managed the o/s fine, but on the n/s my ball breaker just can't break the inner track rod off. I've tried penetrating fluid, hitting with a lump hammer (can't really get enough room for a good swing tho).
Help, I'm back at work tomorrow night so need it done.
    Any ideas?

the only thing that comes to my mind is the gas axe.(oxy acetelene.)have you tried just hitting the knuckle.(the part the ball goes into)and not the ball its self.i dont know if you can get a jack in under the joint to give it some upwards pressure as you hit it.this also takes away the bounce when you hit it.

I don't have any gas, and can't hit the knuckle cause the a/c rad is in the way. I think I'm gonna go and do a Basil on it, and then leave it overnight with the ball breaker on max pressure, somethings gotta give (me or the car). The worst of it is today I've replaced both rear UJs, both upper ball joints, tightened the front wheel bearings, and replaced inner, outer, and adjusted tube for the o/s track rod. I'm now stuck by one flamming joint.

Just put one end of a metal bar on the cast the ball joint arm goes through, and smack the other end of the bar with the hammer. I spent ages trying to get my outer off, bottle jack under the arm bottom and smacking it every which way, until someone told me to whack the actual casting around it a couple of times. Did that and pulled the devil out with my fingers.

Theres a simple way of doing this, either make a drink of tea and leave it half an hour, it'll come off no problems after this, or failing that, get someone else to do it, but before you let them loose on it, tell them that they'll never get it off, it will of course come off instantly making you look like a very not good thing at all.
i type this pearl of wisdom simply cause it always happens to me this way.

Well Basil Fawlty knew what he was doing.
Just laid into it with the sledge hammer, and after a few badly aimed hits the whole lot fell off. But now it's too dark so I've packed up and will start again tomorrow. She's gonna feel like a new truck (after I've had the tracking adjusted of course) new ball joints, new track rods, and still to be fitted (tomorrow I hope) a nice new steering damper.
The new track rods have grease nipples, and look good compared to the old ones, just gotta wait and see what issues the steering damper thows up tomorrow.

Yeah got the whole lot from Roughtrax. You pay a bit more but the parts have a better feel about them. Just had to wait until the dampers got into the country (they arrived Thursday). Don't forget my truck doesn't like me working on her, (she fell in love one year with the good Doctor anglegrinder and always makes me pay if I do it myself).

if its the same damper as i got the there is no ball joint on it like the original so it will go on no problem.
