  • Roof lights LED mod

    One down, five to go!

So, is there a handy 'dash lights' feed I can tap into anywhere near the driver footwell area? What colour code wire?

see if you've got an "illumination" wire to the stereo... it's the one that dims the display when you turn the lights on.

There probably is, but I didn't use it when I swapped the jap one for a Blaupunkt. Anything closer to the footwell?

Behind the right speaker pod would be good as thats where I've run the rooflight cables to. Are the door switches illuminated? I dont recall...

When you say "LED mod" are you thinking of putting LEDs inside your spots ?
If so I would advise against it as the heat from the spot bulbs will knacker the LEDs in a very short time.

Laugh!!! I nearly bought my own beer.

Ah well! It's been a pleasant few hours doing it!

They are only 55w spots, and being roof lights, only used for short periods. I'll see how it goes, and hope I've got ultra high temperature LEDs!

I tried putting LEDs in my front fogs, 5 minutes and they were melted plastic.

Lookin good, I really must get round to doing mine (I only did the wiring a year ago).
I was looking at some on ebay america, that have the LEDs built in. Looking at your truck makes me think I really must get round to finishing the job.

Looks damn fine that man, all you need now is blue 501s in sidelights and they'll all be the same colour. Looking at yours has convinced me that i need some.

PS, can you actually switch the leds off with lights still on?

Don't know why, but each time I think of those LED's in those spots, the song 'Burn baby burn' keeps springing to mind.

They are powered from the dash lights, so whenever they are on, the roof LEDs are on. I will put a switch in so they can be controlled independently because I want to be able to switch *just* them on when parked in large dark carparks such as the one at our local firework display last year! Took ages to find the car in pitch darkness!

I think I'll probably fit the sidelights with multiple white LEDs to get the same colour. Less current, never need replacing*

                      *In normal use!

I imagine the LEDs in angel eyes are in a different part of the lamp, not sharing the same airspace as the main lights.

Anyone know of a heat resistant water clear resin? I figure I could pour a few mil info each lamp covering the LEDs. Should protect them.

What about that stuff you used to be able to buy to set flies in as a kid?

I found an unconnected orange wire with a bullet receptacle in the bottom of the centre console with +12v on it when the dash lights are on. I reckon that must be it. It was handy enough to do the roof LEDs and the inclinometer backlighting. Cheers Matt!
