  • Range Rover v 3rd Gen

What is the opinion regarding the merits of:
2000 Range Rover, Diesel ( BMW engine )
    98 Surf Intercooled.
They are around the same cost.
The Range Rover has lots of toys, drives nice and a much better interior. Lots of used ones around to choose from.

The Surf is more solid and would be more reliable, I am not keen on the seats.
Very scarce unless you import from Japan.

What is your opinion guy's and gal's ?

i drove a disco on tuesday and it wsa fun offroad(mainly cos it was not mine and i did not mind bumping it!) but my surf could do anything that it could on allterrains, landy was on muds! Even the guy taking me out said that the surf was more comfortable. The landys have some strange electrical issues like the hazards came on and would not turn off!

the chap taking me out summed it up nicly he said 'the surf and the landys are pretty much on par but the surf was just screwed together better!)

so really depends what you want in a truck.
it never rain it pours! glad I got the 4X4

The BMW diesel engine is very underpowered in a Range Rover, only the V8 in my opinion is any good in the P38 Rangie.

A V8 with an LPG conversion would be better.

The Rangie will be better to drive, more comfortable & the interior is better than a 3rd Gen. But reliability is awful.

I have driven many Range Rovers at work & love them. But if it's my money then it would be a Surf every time.

Someone will probably correct me on this but, isn't the BMW 2.5TD engine the next development of the BMW engine vauxhall have been using for the last 10 years?

that means it's effectively an astra engined range rover

I've owned three Range Rovers, all V8's and quite simply they are pants. Nice engine although the early twin carb one I had was most reliable and fun to drive. Later ones, too many things to go wrong. If you buy one make friends with an auto electrician or at least keep a multi meter in your glove box as you'll need it. Go for the Toyota.

Remeber the saying: If you want to drive into the jungle buy a Land Rover but if you want to be able to drive back out again then buy a Toyota. Feel free to substitute "jungle" for any journey, if you buy a RR you'll know what I mean.
