  • Two broken bits

Finally had a chance to take the front diff off today (thanks for assistance goes to Chris and my neighbour John). Whilst doing that I also noticed another 'breakage' which would explain why cornering was a trifle 'entertaining'.

First two pictures show the panhard rod bracket shorn clean through at the bottom. This will let the rear axle 'float', which is fun!

Second two show what happens when you apply too much power, whilst going up a bumpy/rocky hill, in low range, get some air, and your very grippy mud tyres hit the ground and stop dead. Something gives.

So, I'll need to get the bracket welded back up, no great problems.

However, assuming that I can get a new 'big gear thingy' (ring gear I think), how easy a job is it for someone with a set of spanners/sockets/mallet and a lot of enthusiasm to replace?

*edit* hit the wrong button whilst attaching images - oops

Cool break, thats the down side of the extension bracket, it doubles the leverage on the support.

I'll stick with the lenghtened adjustable panhard rods!

The diff is good! way to go. I have some spare whole front diffs, or just gears, depends on your ratio. A gear set is about £180 new , plus install is a very specialist job if you want it to last. Best DIY option is get a used diff complete.

I try to do things in style if at all possible.

I thought that replacing the gears might be a specialist job. Gaz thinks he might have a gear from the diff he replaced, so getting hold of the replacement bit doesn't look like being too hard, it was just the fitting that I thought might be an issue.

If you have a suitable replacement diff that I can just drop in, then that may be the way to go. I need a 4.1:1, how much would you be looking for one of those, and would you be interested in taking the 4.3:1 that I bought off ebay without knowing the ratio in part-ex?
