  • drove my first 2.4

Just drove my first 2.4 surf.
I am on my second 3.0 2nd gen. A guy came round with a 2.4 manual. I was pleasantly suprised it drove nice and the engine sounded as sweet as a nut.
With all the bad press the 2.4 gets I thought I would not like it but it was a nice car. I would not be to keen on the manual though I think to auto is much better.

good to see a positive post about the 2.4 for a change.

i think the head issues always get mentioned and not enough of the good stuff.

had mine four years now and it's never let me down.

    cheers scotty

well so far mine is spot on, i have been so surprised how solid and well built these are that i've recommended a surf for the old man. i keep an eye on the temp and burp the sytem every couple of jorneys, simple to do.

i have been round the engine bay with me dashboard shine, oh there a cracking tip, dashboard shine and bumper shine from tesco's is cheap at 1.79 a can and is scented with lemon, is silicone spray and will not perished rubber, unlike wd40, i go through cans of the stuff cleaning all the seals and rubbers, all around the swing arms and bushes, the years just fall off and she looks so sweet now, really fallen for my surf. and theres plenty of power too, i don't floor her all over the place so my mpg is comparible to my old 2.0l mondeo. just keep the revs at 2200 for accel then back off til she drops down a gear. sweeet

might be a rare thing for a 2.4 to be highly regarded, i find this on other web forums, like i said i had a v6 gsi vectra estate, rare as hens teeth, only 317 ever made, so i was at the top of the food forum chain and all you heard from other v6 owners were mines better than yours when infact the v6 is an unreliable, delicate engine, pricey to fix.. was like driving a time bomb, you knew something was gonna give, was just a matter of time.

      ok i'll stop now

I changed to a V6 in my constant quest for a Surf to be something much more agile. I got slightly more agile.....Anyway, my old 2.4, once the head was done, was awesome. It was old, ugly, soggy and noisy but they're a laugh once you've got a bit of speed up and the wall of sound if you stamp on the gas is kind of addictive. It sounds like some kind of manic bus.

No complaints at all with my 2.4. I bought it with the head done (no proof, though) and love driving it.

It ain't slow, as a lot of people claim, and with the Bobbox, it's even, dare I say it, actually quite quick!!
            It just does, OK?

Very easy. Only 4 wires.. Power, earth, one on the throttle position sensor, and one on the fuel pump..

Err, no. But I have got a heavy right foot. No worse MPG, but I did keep turning the box up a bit, and a bit more, and a bit more...

Lots of lovely unburnt fuel being chucked straight out the back.. and less MPG.

Now back to a sensible setting, no smoke, and the same MPG (but more ooomph!!)
