  • AXA Insurance via QuoteA

A few months ago I got insurance for a V230 Merc van from the above company (about £1600 over 10 installments). Now (4 months later) that I've sold the van I wanted to transfer my insurance to a 1993 2.4td Surf.

I've been told that AXA will not transfer the insurance because they don't cover people with these types of cars unless they are over 30.

QuoteA have said I have to pay them £271 to cancel my insurance, because the credit agreement was with a finance agency.

Does this sound right? Should I have to pay to cancel?

Some companies do that, its a legal scam. Im not sure its right if you wanted to transfer to a vehicle they don't insure, but if you cancel it outright i think they can. Have a look at the smallprint

      I think it's utter b0ll0cks!

As it is a finance agreement - as with any finance agreement - if you have paid over half the value you are legally entitiled to return the goods (ie policy) in a saleable condition (-not applicable in this case) and walk away without owing anything!

I used this clause a few years ago when i bought a new 5 series BMW on finance + large deposit for £25,000. I took it back to dealer after 14 months to upgrade and he offered me £9000 part-ex. he said the bottom had dropped out of the market etc etc -which it had.
i ended up dropping the car off, walking away and owed nothing, but left the dealer with a neg' equit' on the car.

check the wording of the finance agreement carefully - it may have changed over the past few years.
      Everyone thinks I'm paranoid!!

Update from QuoteA is that all I have to pay is the transfer fee of £60 and my policy carries on £400 cheaper till the end of the year. I can live with the extra £60 for the transfer - definately sounds more reasonable than what they wanted first.

By the way - thanks for lightning quick responses!! I'm really looking forward to getting my second Surf.

Also, Antshiel you're quite right - I asked them on your advice & they told me if I want to insure a car that they (as a broker) can't do, then I have to cancel and pay the fee. If they can find me a deal with another insurer then I just pay a transfer fee.

          All sorted

Once I get my no claims at the end of the policy i'm not going back to QuoteA or AXA. Very poor service. Had to call them 8 times just to get this transfer arranged (in between getting cut off). Everytime you call you have to explain it all again.

I know everyone's experience with insurance companies varies greatly, especailly between age groups, etc, but when I got the Surf , even though I have a good driving record , maximum no claims, clean licence, this didn't count for much as the Surf was insured as an additional car and any no claims bonus earned, and used on another policy, can't be used again on a second car. So it's basically like starting from scratch. I phoned a few insurance companies and checked a few websites, all prices averaged about £700 , down eventually to about £350, then I came across a broker called Roadsure, they do a scheme for 4x4 's insured as a second car, they have a set policy that never gains any discount , the premium stays pretty much the same from year to year, but they came in at £235 fully comp, agreed valuation, and max mileage of 5000 per year. cant grumble with that, may be worth checking out for all fellow surfers who use the Surf as a second car, also that price was higher than normal becuase the surf is classed as a grey import, a UK 4Runner would have been about £180.

I used Aquote to insure my Land Rover Discovery 300TDI ES and after about 3 weeks i was finally able to find someone to buy the pile of sh*te off me! When it came to changing the insurance from that too my 2nd, 2nd gen Surf i got totally screwed! for less then a month of driving the land rover it cost me just shy of £1000 for the insurance alone! because of cancelation fees etc
