On 20/06/2003 i was involved in a serious bike smash. I was coming home about 10-10.30 pm on my zx12 from a ride out with some mates. I was on the college road in perry barr doing about 60 - 70 about half a mile from the traffic lights.Tthere is a slght bend in the road where there is also a side road. As i approached the bend a stupid little singh in a rover 216 pulled straight out without even glancing in my direction. The obvious happened, i braked, the bike stood upright and the bike and me slid sideways on into a parked car followed by a lamp post and finally, a brick wall. The bike disintegrated and took flight in several directions. By the time i had stopped flying and came to rest against the wall, everything seemed ok. That was until i tried to stand up and my right leg collapsed from under me. I went to hopical, had leathers cut off and there it was, My fib and tib were hanging out of my leg. This meant 13 weeks in hospital, 11 operations, MRSA, collapsed lung and to top it all pneumonia. My leg was basically rebuilt from the knee down, with various bits of metal, pins, brackets and screws, skin grafts and muscle from the back of my leg moved to the front and all held in place with an external fixator (scaffold). I was left unable to walk for 9 months and had the fixator on for 6 of those. Anyway (sorry if its gettin boring but i am so relieved and have to vent it somewhere) 15 months later i was walking again allbeit with a limp. I started physio and the first session something cracked. OH $HIT thought me. Back off to hospital and yes the tibia had snapped clean in two. To cut a very long story short, another 4 days in hospital and no walking for a further 6 weeks, i was pi$$ed off (and skint) with 1 1/2 legs and no bike . There was a little hole in my leg which would not heal as splinters of bone from inside my leg kept working their way out, this went on for the best part of 12 mths.
Anyway i have been going to physio now for just over 1 year and when i went in this morning, to my surprise, at the end of my sesh my consultant (the bloke who did all the ops) came in to see me. "hello Anthony, i am pleased to rell you everything is well and you can come and see me in 6 months for a check up". Thats it im a free man again. He said i can do everything i used to as long as i keep on exercising it and get it up to strength.
So there you have it, i am now going for a very very big pint. sorry for boring you with this but im a happy chappy
