  • Question for the PC geeks.....

Linda's PC died the other day, the power supply had its chips! So no big deal to replace, got a borrowed one in there at the mo, so need to buy one soon.

The question is this, this happened a week after installing a new graphics card (see the Lego Star Wars thread!) Now when shopping for cards, I noticed some mentioned a minimum power supply needed, so i'm wondering did the new card overtax the power supply? or was it just a coincedence? The new graphics card (Sapphire Radeon 9550) we got dosn't mention power needed on the specs.

The PC's old power box was 250W, should I try and get a bigger one? If so how big, or it like Surf batteries, fit the biggest that will fit!?

Fit a 400W or upwards. That should be ample.

Yep, bigger one required, then all should be well.

I've got something like 850w one in one of my work machines. Power hungry? Moi?!

A ageing twin processor thing running some pretty heavyweight data extraction tools.

I also have a Sun laptop which practically glows like its namesake!

                Sad...

There was a feature in the Maplin catalogue - PC cooling systems, including "something for hardcore water cooling fans". WTF?!

Yep, the hardcore guys use watercooling, I just holes in the case and add extra fans.

You talk like cooling PCs is an extreme sport.

                        Anyone for Extreme-laptopping?

I've got an intercooler with water spray fitted on mine, performs really well, even better in cold weather.

Pah! Old school! I use liquid nitrogen pumped from our semiconductor fab at work (and a fan).
