Windows software is for running on Windows, (obviously)
, but *nix has equivalent, and in most cases far better, software to run on it than windows. If you can do it with M$, there's an equivalent open source package or so for the same task.
Although the Mac OS is customised to a degree from the original base, it is still the same underlying system at heart. So you have the choice of Mac software, and also open source. An idea of what type of choice you have:
