OSX is a BSD unix based system. *nix software will generally compile and run on the Mac. Granted, they have done weird things to the system, but the base system is still *nix. If you can do it on a pc, you can generally do it with a Mac.

Was just meaning that there is life outside of Windows. Windows software is for running on Windows, (obviously) , but *nix has equivalent, and in most cases far better, software to run on it than windows. If you can do it with M$, there's an equivalent open source package or so for the same task. Although the Mac OS is customised to a degree from the original base, it is still the same underlying system at heart. So you have the choice of Mac software, and also open source. An idea of what type of choice you have:

Have listed those sites due to FreeBSD being the base system that is used, but open source software is largely machine/system/distro independent. Also, don't know what Apple have changed it's name to, but you do have the Wine emulator for running a good percentage of M$ software on *nix.

I have both Windows based laptop and a MAC laptop. I use XP for games but the MAC for when I want stability. The MAC is more stable, more secure for online shopping, faster, easier to use and I can still use the docs I create on Office 2003 on my MAC's Office 2004 for MAC and vice versa.

The MAC has many apps and they are easier to install, easier to remove, will not blue screen and you can still use your USB drives, printers etc on it.

A lot of MAC apps are freebie downloads, albeit they are named differently to their Windows counterparts.

All in all...the MAC is far superior but the XP machine is better for games.
