  • Does the Spending ever Stop

Does the spending ever stop on a uk spec surf eg a 4runner 94.
Its a fantastic beast but it has cost a small fortune in 2006.

2006 includes the normal mot etc plus

Ripped rear axle stay bar from chassie mount - £150 for both sides as both sides knackered.

2 sets of rear anti rollbar bushes and clamps

front anti rollbar droplinks x2 £20 each

2 upper front ball joints £20 each

2 lower front ball joints £18 each

Blocked rad still not fully sorted yet Ummm £140 - 160ish but ill need to sort it b4 warmer weather comes

new rear brake drums - both lipped and cracked £42 each

seized front brake calipers - (new seal and pistons needed) cheaper to get 2 x recon calipers @ £53 inc vat each exchange

and as the cold weather kicked in both batteries kicked out. Well i guess for 2 old 2nd hand batts of a 7.5t truck, 3years life aint bad, but £110 for 2 HD 600cca batts hit hard at xmas.

really i guess im just seeing money constantly rolling out this last year and it hasnt finished yet.
Ok so im having a moan lol i know there are some people (not mentioning chris or gaz) that have prob spent more by needing a new head or blowing the front diff once or twice.

Its a 12 year old car, most of that list is general wear and tear, plus offroading abuse will help stress stuff.

      Its worth it!!

I know i know.......i still love the beast. I guess over 3years ive had it not spent on anything major untill this last year where it all seemed to come at once.

Now the clutch has started slipping so thats booked in for this monday for a new 1.

Hope all goes well Jon....as you say, reading several posts it appears that quite a few were hit during 2006.
PS, dont forget all the front steering components and just had to get some new rubber b4 the MOT coming up.....

Approx Total to-date [over 3 yr]:
          Rear Springs....................... £80
          DIFF 2nd Hand....................£100
          DIFF and Half-Shafts...........£2500
          Steering Components..........£300
Rims & Tyres, bits & bobs....£300 [Colways lasted nearly 3 yrs of abuse]
          Tyres......................... .....£218

Then add on all usual stuff.

To be honest, no other vehicle has had so much spent on it! As you say just love the beasty

i just potter about in mine and havent had to spend anything other than for oil changes

it just seems to rumble on. there again i dont offroad too often - if at all really!

i think though that a truck that has cost around 2-3k to buy, which was what, 20k new, can afford to have a lot of money thrown at it before it becomes anything like the price of buying a new vehicle

there is nothing quite like a massive hit of depreciation if your cars too new!

my old surf is great value as i see it. very big sort of luxury motor for 2k. i could spend a grand a year on her for the next 10 years and i'd be saving money hand over fist compared to every newer car owner sucking up the depreciation
              problems? i'll take 'em.
