Mind you it probably would have failed on a split outer track rod end gaiter if I hadn't noticed it whilst checking under the car a month or so back. What $$$$ed me off was that it was new inner and outer t/r/e's from Milners last year which were fitted for the MOT. The rubber gaiter had split completely but the metal joint was clean and still well greased. So I bought a new t/r/e from Barry and just changed the rubber. Bit expensive but it was cheaper than changing the whole end and needing to get the tracking reset.
the track rod end wont fail the mot just for the gaiter being split its just a 'pass and advise' providing theres no excessive play/wear in it but theres no telling what $$$$ has got in the joint so i think you did the best thing and changed it!!
