  • Rear Window

Yes, another about the rear window. Firstly, thanks to all who assisted with posts on my question regarding the rear window a few weeks ago. Today I decided it had to be done so went about removing the trim so that I could get the door open. Not easy as my bulk of 18 stone and 6'4 made crawling around in the back difficult. However, with perseverence I managed to work the lock so that the tail gate could be dropped. Once the glass was out the rest was not so difficult. Getting the three bolts that hold the motor in were very fiddly and I had to use a 8mm rachet spanner.

One point to note and I don't know if anyone has done this, it looks as though access may be gained from outside the car by taking off the bracket that hold the spare wheel onto the tailbate. This plastic panel then looks as though it can be removed as there appear to be fixings on the inside. I'll have a closer look when I refit the new motor. That brings me to the next part that a new motor is required. Although the motor is running and the centre cog is turning with enough force to catch my thumb in the gear, unfortunately it will not lift the arms of the mechanism. So I ned a new motor unless anyone out there knows of a way to repair please. Also, Milners, who always appear to be the cheapest are advertising motors at £135 plus VAT which I guess is not bad.

A moral to this though is should your window slow down and in particular be difficult to raise then do some preventative maintenance even if it is just some silicone spray in the runners.

One last question, what are the wires for at the bottom of the nearside of the screen. I don't mean the HRW, but a wire that is afixed to a metal bracket underneath the terminials for the HRW. Mine has rusted away so if it is important then that will need repairing too.

Thanks for this. I have also looked at the site and there is a whole surf mechanism for £75 so one or the other will be a cheaper alternative.

I replaced mine a few weeks back and unless i am mistaken these wires allow the lock to be unlocked when the window is all the way down. Mine too were corroded as well as the HRW ones and my tailgate could be unlocked even when the window was all the way up. Now they have been repaired it unlocks only when all the way down. If it is not this it might be just for the light/alarm that shows on the dash when tailgate is open. All my wires are back in tact and greased, and now everything works fine, good luck and get some knuckle protection and a swear box

Thanks for this. I'll have to make up a bracket and re-fit as a safety measure.
