hi am new to the forum and my m8 has a surf and i am really enjoying it. When i start to drive i am going to buy myself one coz i love the cars so much. Best car i have ever been in. i am goin to eventually buy a 2nd gen for around £2-3k, is this price reasonable?? (bearing in mind i need money over to insure it coz i am quite young)
    thanks guys,
    Alex
    Cheers

      Hi and welcome Alex
a 2.4 you should be able to pick up for from 1.5k to 2.5k or for a 3l you will be looking from 3k and up

We need to know if you're genuine first mate, there's been so many spammers on here recently who just give very basic profiles like yours.

sounds good, as long as i have a surf i'm not too bothered about what engine i have. a diesel would be nice but i'll settle for a petrol. buy the way i start driving next year so if anyone is thinking of buying me a surf for xmas this year then hold on another year!!! I am really pleased at the moment coz i have found that the surf is the car i am actually sure i want.

              Hi and Welcome.

£2-£3K will currently get you a 90-92 2nd Gen 2.4L or an early 3.0L if you're lucky, as prices have fallen recently. The 3.0L has more power and less head problems, although a 2.4L with the modified head is still good but a bit under-powered for a heavy truck.

Your biggest problem is going to be insurance, as young drivers with little or no NCD are likely to be looking at premiums of around £1K or more. Add to that the relatively poor MPG and your truck will cost you a fair bit to run each year, although at that sort of price you can probably forget depreciation.

If you really want one then go for it but be aware that if you want to use it off-road, most insurance companies don't cover you for off-road use.

Insurance will be the killer mate! i had a surf after a couple of months of having a license an most insurance companys wanted in excess of £5000 for basic cover for a 1990 2nd gen for a 17 year old with no NCB! i finally managed to get it down to £1500 but the company i was with have now jacked it all in! you just gotta hunt around!!!

I'll tell you another thing! im 19 years old and am now on my 2nd surf! and they really do ruin your choice in cars! there so outstanding everything else looks and feels sh*t! i had a l*** rover disco 300ti ES with leather seats all the mod cons......hated it! its got nothing on a decent surf
good luck finding one though mate!!

                      Hi Alex,

Really dont envy you buying a Surf for your first motor! The insurance is gonna kill you!

Why not move out and live in your surf? That way you'll get best value for money! It's easy to sleep in one with the seats down, and you'll be amazed at the amount of $$$$ you can store in them!

                      Welcome to the forum BTW.
