this has come off the bbs I moderate. I couldn't resist showing this on here as it might make us 2.4 owners feel a little better!

    ----------------------------------------

Bought a secondhand (1996 N reg) 2.2 diamond LWB Vauxhall Frontera in 1999 from a large well known garage chain. They sold the vehicle from new and did the servicing every year so I thought I was safe.

This is whats gone wrong so far.

Exhaust fell off after 1 week. - this was not covered by there "everything covered network guaranttee".

Although petrol, it always sounded like a diesel. Garage said it sounded ok to them.

As soon as 12 month warranty was over took it to my usual garage who would not touch it as it was so dangerous! They said the engine could explode at any time due to the fault (forget exactly what it was now). And only a Vauxhall dealer should touch it. The original garage said they never said it was ok, it was just ok when they had it!! As it was then out of warranty I would have to pay them.

When it came back the alarm never worked properly. They just said they do not understand what has gone wrong with it!!

My garage also said the breaks had never been serviced properly and they had to get a blow lamp on the disks to get them off!!

Then all tyres needed replacing (which I did know about when I bought it)

All was ok then untill last year.

Strong smell of petrol. Fuel line split and sprayed petrol all over the hot underside!

Few months later, coming of a motorway slip road at about 70, BANG, break pedal went stiff, then right down - NO BREAKS.
Luckly I managed to stop with the gears. Aparently a break pad had shattered, bits went all over the place and jammed up the breaks!!

Last month - funny tapping noise from engine. Big end gone (and other stuff). Needed new engine.

After alot of thought, decided to get a new engine put in (£2500 with everything else that needed doing) as unsellable in that condition.

Two weeks after that, another funny vibration. Rear Differential completly gone!! (£1500)

I always have the vehicle serviced every 10 months and look after it with no off roading.

My garage (very good and reputable) could not believe 1 person could have so much trouble with a car. They said they service a few fronteras and they are no more trouble than any other car.

    Anyone else been this unlucky?

    ------------------------------

then to cap it all this happened to him - boy do I feel sorry for him.

    --------------------------------------------------------

RE my above post on the Frontera, Engine replaced, Rear diff replaced. £4000 later, Rang garage to arrange collection and guess what ..........

Head gaskett gone on new engine! Oil has leaked in to the cooling system, causing more problems!!!

That must make me the unluckiest car owner!

the morale of the story is

'buy a Surf straight off the boat from Japan'

What he paid for his motor plus what it cost to keep running he could have had a cracker!!!
