Dont take this the wrong way Gary but when a insurance company offer a discount for people that belong to a owners club or forum then how can a insurance company know that this person is a member or just someone who has heard of the forum/club, or do you just take their word for it
Lifesure's Surf scheme is not a club scheme, its a scheme we set up for all surfs so you get the discount wherever you hear about us from.

What is the stance on modifications, then? Is it company specific the info
required, or what areas are classed as modifications?
First of all, Lifesure are brokers not an insurer. All insurance companies require notification of any modifications to your vehicle. This means anything non standard at manufacture or that is not a factory option. Failure to disclose modifications can possibly leave a policyholder vulnerable to being refused cover after a claim (policy being made void) - it is irrelevant if the modifications had a bearing on the claim or not.
Some insurers are more flexible than others for certain modifications. Some don't allow any modifications whatsoever while others will look at each risk individually and apply terms as they deem necessary. I have heard of a company not too long ago that threw an accident claim out for a saloon car that had a plastic boot spoiler stuck on. The bottom line is to always disclose modifications to avoid the pssibility you are not insured.
Vatchman - your mods would definately attract extra terms if the description under your avatar is true!

I have heard of a company not too long ago that threw an accident claim out for a saloon car that had a plastic boot spoiler stuck on. Do you happen to know if the policyholder fought the decision?
A lot of driver's in the boy racer scene know they should declare mods, but don't. Simply on the grounds of the ridiculous loadings that many of the big insurers apply to both young driver's and modified vehicles. I'm not saying that the individual was in either of these categories, but a saloon with an aftermarket spoiler? And that's where i came from before moving into surfdom.
On this basis i know many people who haven't fought insurance decisions not to pay out due to modifications, but i also know a few who have fought and won.
The bottom line is to always disclose modifications to avoid the possibility you are not insured.
I'm not sure i ever disagreed with this, but stated the legalities as i understood it.

Never said you were an insurer. Being brokers, however, you deal with a
range of insurers. I asked about company stances. Judging by your answer,
it does however seem that the classification of a modification is indeed
company specific. It's pretty much a moot point anyhow. Pessimistic I
may be, but what insurer won't try to squirm out of paying for a claim?
so if i have no mods on my truck, take it off roading and on my way home i have a accident you are saying they would not cover me.
colin
After speaking to them again as my surf has been modded for offroad use and as i have taken it off road they withdrew the cover, as they will not insure any anything that has been used Or will be intensionally off roaded
NU quoted me £415. went to money supermarket and got it for £187 from Budget with 3 months free life insurance
interesting as Budget would NOT insure me because they dont do Imports. Passed me to some other people who quoted around 400, FC, 1yr NCB, wife 2xSP30's.
Probably stay with NIG through Acadamy.
If I insure both mine and my wifes car with NIG through them, the surf comes in at £250 FC, as my wife has full NCB. (i've only had insurance in my name for a year)
If I go on my own (with 1 year NCB ) without her on the policy, its £350, with its £380... due to 2xSP30.
BUGGA! just insured the wifes car with Post Office 2 months ago!! (we got hte £50 cash back too bringing her TPFT on an old mondeo down to £80 total!)
right then, just see if she is insured to drive my Surf (shudder) on her own policy, not mine.
