Once you get it started, if you turn the engine off, and try to start again,
does it still play up then?

I would say 99.9% its your starter , I had the same problem, bought the new contacts and plunger from Toyota (around £30) Fit them and its been OK ever since.

Possibly, but Andy weren't a finisher.

Nothing worse than getting close to finnishing then having to zip up, they ache all night......

starting problems

Just to throw a proverbial spanner.....
I am having exactly the same problem, turn and click.
I have tried changing batteries and thought I had it cracked, but it's doing it again.
I was going to buy the Starter Motor pack that Roughtrax are selling, but then I was in with my mechanic mate today, and when it did it again, he told me to stamp my foot on brake hard and he "rattled" the gear lever in "park" and it started.
He reckons it could be the parking brake sensor not letting it turn over.
If it does it again mate, give that a try first before doing anything else, then you will hopefully be able to sort it out yourself.
