Hi,
I'm actually writing from Australia, as I want to buy a good and reliable 4WD for a trip around Australia. I'm planning to go off road now and then, and I don't want to have a break down in the middle of nowhere, if I'm driving in the outback. I was generally going for a Land Cruiser, but I stumbled upon a Hilux Surf, that would just meet my requirements.
Now I've heard that the Hilux was quite a reliable car, but that the surf's cylinderheads break quite often. So I would like to know, how I can make sure that this Hilux surf is allright.
It would be this nice thing:

with these specs:

Now unfortunately they didn't write down the engine type, and there wasn't a number on the back of the car. It's sunday so there wasn't anybody there to ask. And I don't understand the engine number. Upon my research, the engine numbers for Surfs don't look like that. I also don't know if the price is ok. 9000 AUD are around 3600 Pounds. The tyres are quite worn out btw, and I think it looks rustier on the picture, than it is.
Now how can I check, if the engine is allright?
What engine could that be?
What else to check?
What if the heads blow while on the countryside?
Is it worth 3600 Pounds?
And generally, is it safe to use a 2000-3500£ used car for a 10'000 miles trip?
Added:
And most importantly: How can I recognize, if the head is an original one that will most likely blow, or if it is a modified one?
Thx for your help,
TB2
