your problem is propably, the rectifier pack.blown diode, most japanese stuff is nippon denso,i would see if you can get a new rectifier pack for your alternator,it will be a lot cheaper.

thanks for your advice and help. I have spoken to a bloke that deals with startermotors and alternators and although he does not have one that will fit my motor he says that if i take it in he will have a look and try and recon it. does anyone know how long a recon can take, is it while you wait cos i kind of need the truck for saturday. I really appreciate all the help you guys are giving me although i managed to de-gas the aircon by being a total t i t and undoing the wrong bolts and not reading the advice properly. I think i will be able to get it out and fixed. well i surpose i will find out tomorrow. off to get drunk to make me feel better about not even been off road in the surf yet and i spend all my time fixing bit on it. but I am still glad i bought one!!!!

When my Alternator first went AWOL after Salisbury, I took it to a good Auto electrician, he checked it & said he could replace the Rectifier/Diode pack in about a hour in Situ, this he did, easy enough ......Unfortunately it made no difference as he found out the the Windings were Kaput !!!!!
Some body on the Forum advised I could get a new un for about £200 Yikes
I sourced another Alternator, unfortunately not the same type but a few some Mods & it's fine now.
I'm physically restricted & managed it, so you should have No Probs............
                    Good Luck

There's always a Payback.... You just cant see your next problem Comin !!!!

                        "mk2 mr2 alternator"

I heard that this from an American called Morgan:

"If you are adding things like fridges, cb or vhf radios, a GPS, computers, or an electric fan, winches, additional lights, etc, you'll need to add a fusebox and Bosch 30A relays. And, even with a three battery setup, you should upgrade your alternator to a 110 Amp model. If you can find a 1990-1994 MR2 alternator and bracket from an MR2 with power steering, you may be able to make a straight swap (although I'm not sure with your diesel motor, as I don't have the shop manual for the diesel Hilux-unfortunately diesel was never offered in North America), and the MR2 alternator produces 100amps, as opposed to the 4Runner's 40-60amps. Alternately (pardon the pun), you could do what I did and order one from Downey Offroad, but I imagine the shipping from the US to the UK would make this a very costly option."

I'd love to find an MR2 alternator to find out if it'll fit my 3.0.

well the story so far is the first bloke i saw with regards to reconing my alternator said that he does not have the parts nessessary!! so been ringing around to find another one, but only to discover that the part number sticker has been damaged and a number is missing!! the n.o i have is 27040-54?51. Another nice man i spoke to said that he knows which one i mean and the missing n.o is a 1. can anyone confirm this??? any way i am quite hopefull (well i have got to be 3 days with out the surf running!!!) that is is the right one cos he described it to me perfectly. He said he might have a new one for £130 (better than £190 from milners) and that he will have a look at it to see whats wrong and he has the parts to fix it!!

Fingers and toes crossed that it will be the right one as i am looking forward to refitting it and seeing if i am able (with help from you lot!!) to get my truck back on the road myself!
it never rain it pours! glad I got the 4X4
