  • Here we go again!!!

Cllr David Trigg from Richmond council attacking (quote) "gas guzzlers like 4x4s". He's gonna charge more for parking, and he's even looking at charging you for parking outside of your own house!

He's getting a good kicking from the BBC news team though, for suggesting that 4x4s are the only gas guzzlers amongst other things, and for not tackling far greater sources of pollution but picking soft targets like the motorist.

Yeah saw it on the breakfast news. The way I see it, it's got nothing to do with pollution or "Gas guzzlers" but the amount of vehicles in and around the capital and the congestion/parking problems they cause.

That maybe so, but when he was being interviewed, he was banging on about "4x4 gas guzzlers pollution". I tried to email in a question (but too late) asking why, when veggie is effectively carbon neutral, did the government ignore this benefit by taxing it so high?

Lets not go there though eh? We all know Brown is just aiming to line the govt pockets and doesn't really give a sh1t about pollution or he'd s$$$$ tax on veggie altogether.

To be fair, Richmond probaly does have a higher concentration of pointless 4x4s than most places in Britain.

Yeah, he says 4X4 and gas guzzlers 'cos he just assumes the two go together, and 'cos they're the only vehicles that get noticed.
Nobody mentions all the big Jags, Bentlys, Rollers and limos taking up more room than most 4X4s.

Its good to see the BBC news site just mentioning cars with high emissions rather than tarring 4x4's. Although it annoyed me this morning on the Radio (BBC) when they were leading with the headline "4x4's to face increased parking..." or something like that.

Although I am not against the government discouraging high emission cars this sort of penalty/tax or whatever you want to call it does ignore the fact that someone in a city could own a gas-guzzler but only use it occasionally, and use public transport most of the time, but someone else who owns a supposedly greener vehicle may be using it constantly - whos the bigger contributor to emissions/congestion?

No, but I personally don't mind paying more to drive the vehicle of my choice if it is contributing to climate change more. It's just one of the factors that contributes to me choosing it.

If it's based on CO2 emissions (rather than random prejudice) I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea.

Just had a look at the list though, and a 2.0 Jag X-Type is above a 7.0 Corvette. Something not quite right there.

will someone please explain to me
IF 4x4's are contributing more to global warming ,what good is the money doing that they are taking off us ???

and do we get a discount off our heating bills

if the goverment was that worried about global warming they would stop the sale of 4x4 and ban them on roads ,

                        The idea is:

                        1. The increased cost discourages people from owning vehicles with high CO2 emissions in the first place (not necessarily 4x4s of course).

                        2. The money gathered from the tax can be used to offset the additional infrastructure cost of lowering carbon emission elsewhere. For example, used to build wind farms, used to subsidise solar panels on government buildings etc etc.

That's the idea. No comment on the reality.

You get a discount on your heating bill if you buy a subsidised solar water heater.....

As far as Codlord's point on taxing people on the amount they produce rather than the amount they potentially produce (a subject close to me, living in the middle of the city but rarely starting my engine more than once a month), the easy answer is to increase the tax on fuel. Not sure that would be too popular though.

There is a simple (painless for the voters) option that nobody has picked up on.

as we all know the car manufacturers etc allow you to use "b5" biodiesel without invalidating the warranty - why not make "b5" the new diesel standard ?

Farmers will get more demand for crops

Oil companies will still be supplying and can be seen in a greener light, it is also something they already (in a limited fashion) supply.

Government gets gold star for cutting emissions

And NO ONE gets picked on in the process.

Imagine how much carbon will be cut for the trucks and buses !!!!!

If parking gets any more expensive it'll soon be cheaper to keep driving, kinda defeats the object don't you think.
