I think you might discover that they have no legal right to clamp you on private land as suggested by tonytom . Alternatively there are very strict regulations concerning parking and other road signs in terms of dimensions, colour and placement and from what you say the sign was not compliant. I would think there is a web site that covers this as I know several companies specialise in getting their clients off road traffic act charges and one has a 100% record although he charges a fortune.

im quite hated by our local clamping company... so far ive got four off in one year. i worked for a garage which had an access road shared with our local private pilgrims council and the gits used to wait for our customers to come park up outside and whilst they were inside booking their car in they would clamp them.i got one off by even cutting the brake hose on the customers car that they wrapped the chain round cos it was cheaper for a £10 hose than a £65 pound clamp!! the looks on their faces is always a picture when they come back and see a perfectly undamaged clamp sitting in the street on its own!!mind you this is the same firm that clamped a police car whilst they were investigating a burglary at the local working mens club in their own carpark!!! numpties!

        Things to remember with clamps...

If you can get the clamp off by yourself then do so. The 'fine' is nothing more than a removal fee.
If you do take it off yourself, make sure that you do not in anyway damage it or you can be prosecuted for the damage.
You must return the clamp to the clamping company. If not you can be done for theft (even if you leave it where you were clamped and someone else nicks it).

Of course, none of this applies if the clamp hasbeen applied by the Police.

Oh... and if you are in the habit of parking somewhere that you are likely to get clamped, buy a Citroen BX, and drop the suspension when you park. They can't get the clamps on them.

I wonder what the largest tyre size that can be clamped is?

well i have 265/75/16 standard 3rd gen wheels and the clamp never went around the tyre so he just wrapped the chain around the shock and left the yellow plate hanging down the front of the wheel

Hmm, lets see, would take me about 2 minutes to undo the bottom of the shock, and do it back up again. No probs.

We dont have clamps up here, scum traffic wardens walk in two's even the plod are paired. No way would the Scot's polis respond to a fat clamper bleeding in a private carpark.

Dont the English police have better to do than back up scum?

What I want to know is this. If it is a private cowboy clamping company that puts the clamp on the car and you report them to the police for trying to extort money out of you, the police will say it is a civil matter. The moment you take an angle grinder to the clamp and the scum clamper reports it to the police they will prosecute for criminal damage. Private clamper. Private land. Isn't it still a civil matter?

I find that waving a three foot length of 42mm o/d steel tube near to their heads makes them re-evaluate the situation.
                      It's only a hobby!

ok, i checked with the old man... he's pretty much in charge of all the land and property for the NHS... the hospitals generally subcontract the carparks management to a private company... so, they can clamp you.
dunno where the clamping money goes, but the parking fee is split between the carpark management company and the hospital.

he went on for about half an hour about it and i got a bit bored!!...

                        p.s. I WANT A 25p COIN!!

I've had a few occasions where I've dealt with clamping contractors on new housing estates.

The typical arrangement is that they do all the work and keep all the money. The contract basically comes down to them having permission to clamp anyone who doesn't have the right permit.
