I was recently given 2 small hand winches - got a colleague to make up the mount (top geezer
) and bought a longer cable and hey presto! Might not pull the Surf backwards out of a ditch, but pulls a normal car up hills, and will do the job I need it to do i.e. pull a tree in the right direction to fell it without landing on the house next door 
Cannibalising the cable has also given me a wire tow rope with a hook on each end
