  • Choosing 2nd or 3rd gen.

Aside from the looks, and purely from an engineering /mechanical perspective is there a marked difference between the 2nd generation and the more modern 3rd generation? Cat and pigeons springs to mind.

    Cheers.......Johnny

Apart from only having the 3.0 engine, the main difference is a more advanced 4WD system that can be used on the road - the 2nd gens cannot safely use 4WD on tarmac.

Oh, and the 3rd gens were covered in rubbishy plastic - there I said it

3rd gens have been engineered, mechanically, to look like Suzuki Vitaras, only more girly.

If you really want to get all impartial, in addition to the 4wd thing, 3rd gens are supposed to have better handling and more refinement. Both are essential when putting your make up on whilst driving to the shops.

        hehe, I love these threads.....

The 3rd gen handles better (from the factory), has All-Wheel Drive, intercooled 3.0TD or supercharged 3.4 V6 petrol option, more room inside.

The 2nd gen still looks like a truck, and has a proper fold down tailgate, cheaper, slightly more ground clearance and much nicer dash with lots of gauges and lights.

The 1st gen IS a truck, rides and handles like a truck, with 4 seats.

3rd gen wins hands down for engines and comfort, 2nd gen wins for traditional 4x4 not SUVness. 2nd gens are probably the best mix of price, reliability and availablity of aftermarket parts. 1st gen wins hands down for coolness and offroad ability.

Presumably, the REALLY light blue that comes as standard on the Larry Grayson special edition.

My mistake - we now have the North/South divide going on as well

As a sometime resident of the People's Republic of South Yorkshire, I am staying out of the latter!

Same here. I have to 'sit on the fence' when Wales play England at anything.
