  • Help needed by someone who should know better

    Hi all

Against my better judgement (and the fact that I'm a penny pinching skinflint) I decided to purchase a 1992 2.4TD SSRX yesterday.

See my only other previous thread for more background!

    http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/sh...hlight=hawksie

Anyhow, whilst driving the beast home last night I suddenly lost power, the engine warning light came on and there was smoke and steam everywhere. Whilst the AA man was winching her aboard he noticed a patch of oil and suggested that the Turbo might have blown or that the rings might have gone.

This morning, in the cold light of day, I had a look under the bonnet and there is indeed oil coming out of the turbo area and a few drops underneath on the ground. After filling up the rad it started ok ish but after a few seconds water started pumping out from the coolant top-up overflow pipe.

So, at first guess, can anybody throw some light on the situation and how much it's going to set me back to get fixed.

    Regards

    Hawksie

Did you buy privately or from a dealer ?

If the latter get them to sort it out.

        Yeah, but not good ones

Think you might have a dead head amongst your problems there

          oh dear

          oh dear indeed...

The head was allegedly replaced prior to purchase....

          Anybody offer a second opinion?

sound like the head has gone and is preasurizing the system. give tony a ring at 4x4 toys tell him your probs and he should be able to tell you what might be wrong.

if the heads 'just been done' it might be it has air in the coolant..
does it chuck the coolant out when its cold, or not till its warmed up a bit?
              it's in me shed, mate.

No, spews out the water almost immediately after starting up.

Anybody got any thoughts on the oil from the turbo?

Underneath the turbo are two pipes. They are they are the oil feed and return. If they've not been reconnected properly after the head swap, or if they've been damaged, then that'd be the most likely cause of the oil spillage.

good news - well sort of.
even though the car was purchased privately and the receipt may say "sold a seen" - it's not all cut and dried. - you still have 14 days to approach the seller about the problems and he is obliged to cover upto 50% of repair costs. ring your local trading standards or citizens advice for mor info.
This happened to a mate fo mine a few years ago (engine siezed a few days later) . the seller would not co-operate and was threatened with court action. he later paid for a new engine.
however if the receipt states "sold as scr@p" or "spares or repair" (which some back street dealers do) then it's tough titties.
                      good luck.

I've talked to the seller and he seemed pretty sympathetic so we shall see.

Tried to contact Tony at 4x4 toys but no answer - will try again shortly. Could I get the AA to take it down there if I manage to drive it away from home?

                        Anybody have any more input?

                          New rad cap needed?
                          Is there a thermostat fitted?

Remove the rad cap, set heaters to hot, fill expansion tank to half full, start engine and top up with water.
Leave rad cap off while engine is warming up and keep topping up until the temp gauge starts moving. Re fit rad cap bring engine upto normal running temp, check that warm air is coming from the heater vents. If no warm air, then you've either got an air lock or the heater matrix is blocked and the coolant isn't circulating.

With the engine still running, remove the cap from the expansion bottle and see if there's a continuous stream of bubbles coming from the end of the tube, if so then you have exhaust gasses in the cooling system (gasket or cylinder head knackered)

If coolant is pouring from the end of the tube, then the rad cap is not sealing properly so renew it.

                            Bushwhacker

Thanks for that - I tried that first thing this morning after doing a bit of searching on here last night to see if I could sort the problem out myself with minimum fuss (and expense).

Anyway, to cut a short story even shorter, the water in the rad just spewed straight back out when the engine started. Just tried it again now, water spewed out then bubbled intermittently so an improvement there. Put rad cap back on, constant stream of bubbles from coolant topup pipe but no spewing water - another slight improvement. Unfortunately cold air from the vents inside. Took it for a quick spin and within about a quarter of a mile, boilio. Got home sharpish.

The AA, on my home start relay membership, are taking it to Stevo's tomorrow and he'll have it done for me by lunchtime Tuesday with any luck, whatever the problem may be. Could be the matrix and the head could well be knackered. I just hope my Turbo isn't pooped as well.

Doesn't it make you feel good to be alive!!
