  • Off road..

    Hi

I had an SSRX some time ago and was told that I could not use the 4wd on the road as it was something to do with the diff but I could with the later model. Can anyone shed any light on this?

What year did they do this and what year should I be looking for?

3rd gen or above you can use 4wd permanently.

      Asked quite a few times.

Basically, the 2nd gen (and probably first, don't know about them) have a locked centre diff when in 4wd mode. This isn't good for use on hard surfaces as it can cause diff wind-up when turning corners.

The 3rd gen (from about 95 onwards, look for the models with a lift-up tail gate) have two 4wd modes, one of which allows the centre diff to run open which is what you need on hard surfaces.

What are the tell tale signs of 'diff wind-up'? And if it does happen how do you fix it?

Mine has a lift up tail gate but I'm certain it is a Gen 2 (SSRX 3.0ltr) and shouldn't be used in 4x4 mode on the road unless its very slippery....hmm isn't that like most of our UK sh..one..t roads.

Basically if you need 4wd on the road i.e. in snow, ice or any really slippery conditions, you can use it but not on dry tarmac.

OK, if that's true (and I'm not doubting your word) then you have a unique 2nd gen. Got some pics (with the tailgate open)?

Does it have the tw&tty plastic trim on the door bottoms, and the girlie looking
                      front bumper?

Nah, no 2nd Gen ever had a lift up tailgate, all pickup style fold down tailgates.

Either someone been at it with a grinder and welder or you have a 3rd Gen, which means you are fine to use 4WD or AWD (center diff open) on the road.

Don't second gens have that funny umbrella style handbrake too?
Parts of your engine go up, stop then go back! Mm!
