It turns out that the Euronics store that we got the card from doesn't know the difference between SD Cards and XD Cards. The card we have is an SD card and is not compatable. Full marks to Olympus Digital Support Centre who emailed me back this morning and suggested I call their freephone number with all the bits in front of me.
Luckily the Panasonic I have will take the SD card, so it was not a total waste of money.
