  • Knocking noise at rear

Every time I go over a bump there is a loud knock at the rear. I have checked whether it is is perhaps the spare wheel, the exhaust or even the rear seats. I crawled underneath the rear but could not see anything but then I am no mechanic. Not sure if there is anything specific to look for. The vehicle is serviced every six months and the noise started not long after the last service in April this year.

Most likely the anti-rollbar brackets have broken, a common problem that's about £6 to fix.

Thanks for the diagram but not being exactly mechanically minded, what would I be looking for on the diagram.

Get underneath, and look at the top front of the rear axle. That orange bush
in the picture will most likely be black on yours. There will be two of those
on the sway bar. The brackets are clamped over those bushes. The ends of
the sway bar are visible from the rear arches. They have an arm pointing
upwards which is bolted at the top of the arm to a bracket.

Checked all bushes and none looked shot. Even got the missus to sit right in the rear to check and it appears to be coming from the offside rear. Checked the exhaust for clearance and still nothing. To be a bit more descriptive i suppose it could be a bit more of a clang type of knock. Funny thing though if I go across a sleeping policeman no noise except the normal bump when going across one of them. Probably best to change all the bushes as the vehicle is nearly 9 years old and has 63000 miles on the clock.

Sorry its a December 1997 3.0L auto with spare wheel on rear door so I assume it is the KZN185 model.

Have you let your hostage out of the boot? I released mine and the noises went away.....
