  • Radiator re-build

After 2 years of rattling and bumping and grinding over what they call roads here in Africa my radiator started to leak. Some of you may remember that I had it enlarged (from 3 to 5 core) before we left for Africa in '94. So I changed the in & out rubber pipes just in case they had perished - no change so finally I had to have the whole shebang pulled out and checked.

Found that the continual bouncing had caused a "ledge" in front of the rad to cut itself into the rad - a 1cm channel, 3-5 mm deep across the whole width of the rad. Again the problem was that I couldn't "see" the damage until we pulled the rad (similar to the brake pipes that burst up and behind the fuel tank a while back).

So we sent the rad off to some "ex-spurts" for reconditioning and set a bloke to grind the lip down. The rad needed the top & bottom inlet/outlets redoing as it seems they were corroded. Company here in Nairobi called SAGO Radiators did the rad and a very nice job they did of it too.

Now to the fill-up. The original rad was 10 litres capacity but when we drained this new rad I took at least 16 litres out (without opening the engine block's tap). So can anyone tell me how much (by vol.) coolant is left in the engine block if you just drain the rad (via the tap in the bottom)?

    Thanks
