Hello
If you drain the autobox you'll only drain a bit of it! Like 1 litre.
There is a site (Vince, help) that explains how to use the box to drain itself. You have to have it running, and put the inlet and outlet pipes into buckets.
One is filled with fresh ATF, the other empty. The new ATF is sucked into the box and torque convertor, the old ATF pumps out.
Takes more than normal, but - you completely clear the box.Another member of the 'A' team

Originally posted by ian619Thanks Gerard, i'll make a note of that, still aint got round to changeing the whole lot, just drained it and refilled, i still cant see the sence in just adding new fluid to old, sort of defeats the object if you know what i mean, and yet it seems to be such a performance to replace the whole lot Also i could do with some to add to the deisel as it's supposed to be good for cleaning the injectors etc,
Did you collect it or get it sent? wondering if it's worth going to get it or get it shipped, (i'm near portsmouth)
You probably won't need this after Marks generous offer, but the price was including VAT and delivery to my door by Specialised Products own van.
Like you I only drained the old oil out as anything was better than running on old oil. I ran the engine for a few seconds which purged another litre or so. I may do another oil change in a few months to dilute out any remnants of the original oil.
I bought one of those flexi hosed funnels from a motor factor and then used elephant tape to attach it to the dipstick tube. I didn't know if there was a washer on the drain bolt so I used plumbers PTFE tape to seal it. Any idea what the torque setting on the drain plug bolt should be?Did the Surf put the Toy in Toyota?

Popping over to Marks on sunday morn, What put me off the two bucket method was the amount of fluid req to start with, at about £8 per ltr it would be an expensive job and 3 gallons of it was reccomended to start, I printed off the method posted by TonyN (i think)
1, with two clean buckets under the ATF cooler undo the ATF pipes, a small amount will drain from the pipes, place the ends of the pipes in each bucket and get someone to flash up the engine and make a note of which pipe oil is discharged from (this is the return pipe)
2, fill the other bucket with new fluid and secure the pipe in the fluid ( so it can suck it up)
3, start the engine and run at idle, old fluid will pump into the empty bucket and new fluid will be sucked up from the other one, After pumping out and sucking in about 2-3 gall you should have all new fluid in there, switch off and reconnect the pipes, Now i think he stated that some old fluid would be left in the cooler which kinda defeats the whole performance for me so i think that while it's pumping i would blow the cooler through with an air line (low pressure) and blow the old stuff out (or best part of it),
4, top up level, start up and check for correct level, ie engine up to temp, level ground, shift through the box,
Sounds easy dont it and it should be if 1 you have a pit, 2 you've removed the air-con stuff from under there, doin it in the cold and wet laying on yer back and knocking the bucket of new fluid over is a whole other matter So anyone wants to use me pit to do their's you are welcome,
Just take care when undoing/doing up plugs and pipe fittings, I buggered up one ATF pipe on my buick with the result it blew off while driveing it with the loss of drive and red stuff all over the roadToo young to die and too old to give a toss

Cheers Gerard, thats not a bad price then, also forgot to ad above that the old fluid can be filtered and used (small amounts, 1/2 lt,) to add to yer tank to clean the injectors, believe MattF has done this,Too young to die and too old to give a toss

Originally posted by TonyNYou will get nearly 3-4 liters out through the drain, the whole system takes 6.5 and the converter holds 2.5 liters and the rest is the cooler and other pipes.
