I booked it in about a month ago for a free safety check. I then got a letter back informing me that it needed to be recalled and that they have to get details from Japan about the chassis numbers. They will then b gettin intouch again to book a date whe they have got the correct parts etc etc.....They have been VERY helpful !

I got my letter from Toyota (GB) this morning. Booked the Surf into the Plymouth dealer for Thursday 24th at 2pm.

They said it would be done within 2 hours, so I should be able to pick it up at 4pm. No real need for a loan vehicle.

I called my local dealer to find out how i go about getting a recall check for my surf...I got a "W0nk3r" of a sales guy who told me that they would contact me if i needed a recall ( he must be feckin psychic ).... I was gonna argue with him but stopped as i would really have insulted him....

I will get him back when i get my 38 point free check done ...( he never knew about that either )

I then called Toyota GB on 01737367600 and got a very friendly lady who is gonna run a check on my chassis number.. They will contact me in about 2/3 weeks...

                  Inner peace feeling again...

The free safety check is just them looking for work, they can find things that are dubiously worn and hope you'll be scared into getting them to fix it.

You can almost guaranty you'll need an Idler arm/Pitman arm, various ball joints, pads/shoes (if they bother to take the wheels off) and tyres.

Mine's one of the ones that needs doing. Got a letter from Toyota GB this morning asking me to inform them of where I'm going to get it done.

The inner passenger side CV boot needs doing. Is it worth me getting them to do that while they're at it? (do they need to take the driveshaft out to do the job -unlikely I think?)

Tony, think I asked you this the other day - can I take the drive shafts out and still pass the MOT? Thought this might be a way of stopping wear on the front CVs whilst I save up for manual hubs.

Thanks for that Tony, will bear that in mind. Its really annoying that some of us seem to get toyota dealers that really could not bother doin some extra pen pushin and number punchin to help out the import surf owners...

                        Shame on them...

Andy, they won't have the driveshaft out to do the relay rod (although looking at some of the mechs in our local dealer......) so I'd guess they'd charge you extra for it.

As for the MOT with no shafts in, it would depend on the guy, I can't see any reason why it'll fail as long as you've put the drive plates back on the front to cover the open bearings, would be better to cover the back in with something as well if you going to leave it for any amount of time, but unless you wading or offroading dirt will have trouble getting all the way through the hub to front

                            Cheers Tony.

Just been on the phone to Brooklyn Toyota in Worcester, told the chap mine needed the steering rod.

Chap takes a few details, says "No problem mate - hows 30th August for you?"

                            "Great" says I.

                            "OK, see you then!"

Nice man! I'll report on how it goes.
