      Sledge,

      Just checked both Surfs and neither have any additional wires going to the terminals.

            ahhhhh!!!!

            after my recent woes,do have a look at the starter relay.if that is not earthed properly(or indeed poorly) it leeches a few milliamps back through the ignition system,(resulting in two forum members staying up really late)
            the net effect is a slow and gradual drain on your batteries.has anyone suggested checking the electrolyte levels?
            Non intercooled nothing.

              That's not been suggested to me before. Are we talking about the square relay housed inside the fuse holder compartment?

              Yes, I have already checked the electrolyte levels with an hydrometer and all seems ok there.

                Deffo check the main earth strap where it bolts to the body/chassis, remove the bolt, clean with a file and add copper grease and reassemble.

                I have had this fault a number of times on various motors, and it usually does the trick.
