The Soviet Bear bombers pushed thier blades to the limit. Apparently, NATO fighters that shadowed them during the cold war could only get so close due to the sonic booms coming off the blades - madness!
Yeah I've read something like that. The noise inside was absolutely deafening...
Sticking to the aviation theme, has anyone done any reading on the TSR2 project?

TSR2 the jet the yanks did not want us to have and would have had us at the forefront of delopment not behind the americans .......the saddest thing was every bit of the prototypes were distroyed down to nuts and bolts being cut up

I take that as a yes then...
Possibly the single most damaging event in our entire aviation history [which is littered with quite a few].

I don't think my Dad ever got over it [he worked in the aircraft industry on and off since he left the RAF in the late fifties] although he never worked on the TSR2 itself. Even if you bring it up now, he turns a funny colour and spits words like betrayal and sold down the river etc. Thing is, he was right...
how do you stop the blade tips from passing the speed of sound?... they're LONG!... so don't have to be turning the hub very fast for the tips to be going silly speeds!...

or are they well away from it??
Well, assume the diameter is 100m, this is a circumference of 314m. You'd have to do more than 1 revs/sec to acheive speed of sound. When I've seen those big ones, they are rotating at well less than 1 rev/sec.
