Hi Jet and welcome to the nuthouse basically look for what you would on any motor, check all the 4wd works ok on loose ground if its a 2nd gen.go for the 3l as its got more power if you go for the 2.4 then you want to find out if the head has been done on it and if so make sure you get paperwork to prove it.Take a look in the surfs for sale section there are some nice ones for sale and also depends on how much you are willing to spend
also give Hilux on here a shout he normally has some good surfs for sale and good prices too

what you need is a 1st gen...they're the real deal (as hard as the truck clarkson tried to kill).

and you can buy mine if you like because i now need to get rid after weeks of umming and aaring.

new turbo, new rad, new battery, recon alternator, 2 " lift, bullbar, spots, brand new shiny blue pcv oil seperator fitted and a boost guage....go for it!

smokes a bit (injectors likely culprit) but goes like stink since new turbo fitted.

      welcome to the forum BTW.

be warned, they're all nuts here and i'm the ONLY sane one here.
i swear, it was like that when i got here...

          Welcome.

Codlord's site has a good FAQ section:

          http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/info/faq.htm

          as does Morr's:

          http://www.hiluxsurf.eu/faq_main.htm

Steer clear of the 2.4s unless you know the cylinder head's been replaced with an uprated one (or it's cheap enough that it doesn't matter if it goes).

To buy one, look in the For Sale section of the forum (a lot of people on here buy and sell them through there), email Hilux Bob (search for a forum user called 'Hilux') or go to Mr Surf on ebay (ebay user ID spoon456). Both have good reputations. There are other private sellers, dealers etc. but I can't see much point in bothering with them (other than a warranty I suppose).

And from Hampshire, TonyN (www.4x4toys.co.uk) is your man for servicing, repairs and modifications that you don't want to do yourself (which is everything in my case).

I reckon that's everything. Happy surfing.

Can we stop posting links to that one please? I really really like it and it's beginning to physically hurt me to not buy it.
