So is the bottom line that they will or won't reduce the duty? Maybe I skimmed it too quick but it wasn't that clear to me...

HMRC has received a number of representations both that the existing definition is too restrictive (for example, in terms of ester content) and, on the other hand, that it is not sufficiently restrictive (for example, that it should specifically exclude straight vegetable oil from the scope of the reduced rate).

Sounds to me like they want take veg oil out of the lower duty rate...

What it actually says is that some people have complained that the definition is too restrictive (probably includes some folks from here), and that some other people have complained that it is not restrictive enough (no guesses as to who they will be).

HMRC appear not to have expressed an opinion except to pass the buck to a higher authority (the treasury minister(s)), and to say that any decision returned by the higher authority will be treated as law.

Of course, the treasury is primarily concerned with protecting and generatng revenue, so the odds are a little stacked

I got all the forms and a leaflet through the post the other day saying the duty is 47.10p a ltr. I was also at a course for self assesment today and there are alot of cars that you can claim 100% back on, as long as they are the low emmision bracket thing? Anyway, i put forward the veg oil question and she didnt have a clue?? I think it will take another couple of years before they make there mind up?

That's probably the point - what's the duty on Diesel - is it more than that on Veg Oil... If it is then there's your answer, the gov't can make more money off you if they make you buy diesel.

You are legal if stopped and dipped.

We get WVO for free, so just paying 40 odd pence is still worth it.

I just need to find a good supplier of WVO... most of the chippies round here use palm oil... too think when cool....kinda solid in fact lol..... but i got a couple of peeps who use deep fat friars (not the balding ones who hung about with their homie robin hood) and they are gonna save me the waste oil bout 3lt a time... so thats £3 saved per friar... am gonna have a word with my local pub as they do a load of frying to see what they use, did i see something about if the oil has been used for frying meat it could cause probs?
