  • New owner of an Old Surf!

Hi I'm new to the forum and new to owning a surf. Its a 1991 2.4tdi auto
and I have a couple of questions!!!
    1) I was told its best to leave it in "overdrive" is this true and if so why?
    2) Its fitted with some kind of black box which is linked to the turbo. All I know about it is that it has a variable time setting and keeps the motor running after stopping why? And what should it be set to?
    3) Will the head on my surf go "pop" in the near future or will it have already been sorted ? Its done around 89000miles (A problem that surfs seem to have and that I knew nothing about)

    Many thanks widey.........
Don't call me love, its not my name!!

    firstly welcome to the forum

over drive is like an extra gear thats all its there for you to play with as you wish, all though most do leave on.

the black box is a turbo timer some are fitted with them some are not.
in normal driving conditions it is not required as the turbo bearing does not get enough speed up in normal driving conditions...

as far as the head goes, who knows, forget about that and just enjoy it!!
if it goes it goes!!!thats life

if you take a look through the search facility you will find hundreds of threads that may be interesting to you.....

    enjoy

1 Over drive is like a second set of gears and you should get better fuel economy with it left on

2 It sounds like your black box is a turbo timer which is to keep the engine running to wind down the turbo ,you will be able to set it to a perdetermined time and then it will switch off the engine BUT do not leave the vechile as the police might have something to say about it

3 Heads ....This is a fault mainly on 2.4 diesel surfs there does not appear to be any conecting factors as to who's truck will have this problem Mine has been OK so far (touch wood) but my mates went in a week of him getting it ...The main symptoms are white smoke loss of coolant etc.

I would surgest a good service and check when the cambelt was last done also

Most things are covered in more detail on this site and the search button is very useful

and you know about the red button yet??

cloaking device. or nitrous, could be either....

the overdrive - try it out. good for overtaking or burning chav boy racers off from the lights! kinda drops down a gear when switched off. especially with ECT (sport mode) on too... thats the button by the gear shift. it re-maps the gear timing changes on an auto.

turbo timer allows the turbo to continue to run, cooling it down before turning off, to prolong life

the heads break because the cooling channels are of a bad design in the originals. all you can do is check the coolant levels every few days and ensure its toped up. if you get a leak (rad, hose, whatever) and the coolant level drops a bit each day, you will get an overheated head at some point. AFAIK the temp guage is not a reliable indicator of overheating - KEEP AN EYE ON THE COOLANT!!!!! If you have a replacement Stevo HEAD, then i believe there is a sticker somewhere - dunno where though! otherwise you cant tell a new head at a glance.

depending where you are in the uk, take a trip to a specialist such as 4x4toys.co.uk for a full service. TonyN just did mine, and I now have peace of mind that all the important belts are renewed, the fluid levels are right, the brakes are good etc.

          what colour is your smurf?
