  • Intercooler!!!

Just got my Surf back after a short rehabilitation break at the local jap 4x4 and import specialists.

She took an overdose of abuse last week and her gearbox linkage adjustment or some kind of adjustment on the gearbox became heavily addicted to drive with a total lack of neutral, reverse, or park and seemingly not enough willpower to kick the habit without some TLC from the friendly japanese speaking automobile doctors.

The addiction first came to my attention parked nose in with a trailer on the back in my local halfrauds car park last thursday afternoon. The day before her second annual check up (MOT) in a week. She failed the first on a split exhaust the previous friday.

Having convinced her she wanted to break the habit of only going forwards, I called the RAC and she was duly picked up and rushed to the A&E department of the nearest 4x4 hospital on orange flashy lights. Where she met the triage nurse who advised that she would be treated on monday as that was the first available appointment. They agreed to do a full health check including certificate (service&MOT) at the same time.

So monday morning comes and goes and tuesday they phone me to tell me she has successfully broken her addiction to forwards, and confronted her fears of backwards. But has taken a liking to the kerb due to a seized o/s/f brake caliper, and has therefore been signed off sick until fully recovered. and did i want the above replaced with a toyota caliper which they could get next day (but pay through the roof for) or an aftermarket caliper which would be cheaper but take longer to get. It was agreed that I would try and source the appropriate medical supplies with next day delivery while they got a price from toyota. A quick phone call to milners and sorted, ordered & paid for £84 + VAT, and they rung the garage direct to sort next day delivery and check her chassis number to ensure the correct part was being couriered across the country.

Get's to 5 o'clock this evening and i decide to phone the auto-hospital as i've heard nothing all day and they tell me they're finishing off and she'll be discharged in ten minutes. So i picks her up.

And now the bit that confused me.....

Now i'm no expert and i may well be wrong, but as far as i was aware a standard 2nd gen 2.4 never had an intercooler, so how can it be blocked with mud?

Like i said i may be wrong, but i can't find one.

    Anyone shed any light??

From my limited understanding an intercooler would look like an ally radiator?

      am i right or wrong?

all i can see is the standard rad, and the underslung one above the bash gaurd, which i thought was purely for the air con?

thats correct if you had an intercooler you would know as soon as you open your bonet, like you say there will be an heat exchanger some where poss mounted on the top or around the front bumper area but not much room there for one to be fitted, so i would hazzard a guess that there isnt one fitted....

Maybe they've mis-diagnosed the aircon rad as an intercooler. If it's the aircon rad then it probably needs a good jetwash to get the mud out and make your aircon work more efficiently.

I thought the air con rad was only there to protect the bottom of the truck, when the bash plate bends?

It hasn't worked since i've had it, and spilled all the old refrigerant over the car park of the first mot centre it went to, saves payin disposal fees for the old r12 gas though!!

I can shed some light, the MOT guy is a fool!!!

It doesn't even look like an intercooler, let alone have any piping going to and from it big enough to be the inlet.
