I thought it was a requirement to have the offside one, if the trailer was wider than the car.
nah, it just says that you must have adequate rear view... but if the mirrors are fitted then they can't protrude more than 200mm from the widest part of the vehicle (inc. trailer) so you can't have them when you're not towing.
