New Cam belt has just snapped on my 3rd gen 3lt, I still have the old belt and can put that back on temp till I can pick up another belt, but how do I reset the cam and pump timing???
Please help, I need the car for the morning.

    Thanks in advance

I replied to this once but it has not appeared

    Snapped? S H I T

I hope its all undamaged. Its going to be a big job static timing it. I would not like to try that in an evening with no detailed knowledge. I am sure some one will be along with the proceedure but if it was running at the time its likley that its going to be damaged. You will need the covers off and stuff to get to timing marks on the camshaft i suspect (hope I am wrong) not done a surf yet.

    Good luck Fish.

You need to check your valve clearances to check everythings OK.

It quite easy to line it all up again, GENTLY!!! turn the crank till you feel a piston touch a valve, then turn the cam a little, then you can turn the crank again till you get the timing mark lined up on the crankshaft/fuel pump with the camshaft. It may take a couple of goes of turning the crank nut and the cam.

Turn it over by hand after reassembly a few times before starting up and when you do don't rev it just let idle and see if you have any banging noises.

I don't know on the 3.0L but on the 2.4L there are arrow marks on the Cam, Crank and Fuel Pump pullys and notches in the timeing belt housing. Align all these marks.

Once alined turn the engine over by hand, one full cycle and the marks should line up again, make sure nothing catches while turning the engine over, if the marks are out do it again.

You may have damaged something when the belt broke, then it's a re-build. You might be very luky if the belt broke at a low RPM and you manged to stop the engine from revolvoing strait away.

Thanks Al, the 3rd gen timing belt runs from the cam shaft to the pump only, so it shouldnt have done any damage. Or so I believe, I really do hope I'm right, cause the better halfs dizzy has blown the head and the bits arn't coming till friday so no driving till one of them is running.

            Its no different mate sorry.

The fuel pump runs the camshaft from the belt, if the belt breaks the rest of the engine will still have turned without the cam moving, leading to the inevitable meeting of metal parts.

If it was just idleing you may have got lucky.

usually makes a noise like dropping bean tins down a fire escape.

if the engine just cut out then it should be ok.
should be able to get the work paid for if the belt is new?

                Sooooooooooo lucky

Well, I did as sugested, retimed the cam on the timing mark and the pump too, re-fit the belt & tensioner and turned the engine over three full turns from the bottom pully by hand. Started her up and she purred into life no problem. Infact just been down to the chinese for a late tea. I was lucky that the belt snapped at idle and didnt do damage. Will be taking the snapped belt back in the morning for a refund and new undies!!!!!!
