maybe in 10yrs time I'll be able to afford one!

The sad truth is we can't avoid more plastics and more complex electronics in the latest gen cars because it brings the manufacturing cost down to the car makers. If we look at the new landcruisers they are all plastics and more complex electronics. If you want to go offroad on them first thing you want to do is to strip off the plastics and waterproof the electronics else it will be very expensive! I wouldn't buy a new gen 4x4 if it doesn't have diff locks/traction control, more power, quieter and does more mpg and drive nice on road.

how about this one then? apparently its built on a "modified" land cruiser prado chassis, as is the latest for-runner/surf,

personaly from what i've seen/read in the US offroad press, i would like one, in about 10 years time when it may be cheap enough to offroad. hope fully toyota will sell it in japan with a diesel so "we" can import them!

The old FJ. I definately buy one! Toyota made this for the "freedom truck" market. I watched the launch on the Toyota website(http://www.toyota.com/fjcruiser/index.html).
I was following this for almost 8 months (even before it's launch). I sent few emails to Toyota asking why not sell this in the UK. Julian Voelcker who runs the landcruiser club (www.landcruisers.info) also asked Toyota UK about selling the FJ crusier here and Toyota UK's response was "it is for the North American market". Toyota UK is useless.

Toyotas UK marketing team really sucks!

You only need to count the double cab Mitsubishi Warrior pickups and Challengers/Shogun Sport to see what a huge oppertunity they have missed. Really I must see about 30 of these $$$$$$ things every day and not one single new new Hilux pick-up? Have you ever seen a Toyota pick-up ad on TV? No? Bet you've seen all the Mitsi ones though!

I'm sure they could shift a lot more if they tried.

Toyota UK know they can sell the base Prado/Colarado here for £27K. If they introduced the 4Runner/Surf here for $27K (£15K + RIP OFF BRITAIN MARK-UP) they'd loose out- so they don't sell them.

To give you an idea of the scale of the RIP OFF BRITAIN MARK-UP the same new Landcruiser Amazon is $56K (£31K) vs £48K here! On that basis a new 4Runner/Surf here would cost £23,220 which is on a par with the £22K for a new Shogun Sport.

From what I've seen it's actually very good off road. Just before the US launch they put one of the demonstrators down the Rubicon rock trail with a couple of LC's as "minders". The FJ managed everything the LC's did and sustained zero body damage while the LC's got bashed quite a bit. People are already starting to make bits for them as well - even SAS kits

That what I realy admire about the yanks, they think nothing of buying a brand new car and then modify the hell out of it. You can go into a Toyota dealers in the US and buy a new 4Runner, then get the dealer to fit a supercharger to it.

Try that over here, the dealer would have kittens!!! "oh no sir, you can't sit in it sir, that would invalidate the warrentee"

looks like cross between new mini/fiat ulyssee and a freelander...i can't understand how this plasticy looking lego car shape nonsense has caught on...

an offroader should look like it could hit a log, you get out pull the dent out and carry on, not you hit a log and have to fill the back up with the front end...

At least it doesn't have a "Ford Anglia"(anyone remember them?) back end like the new Rav4!Now that is UGLY!!!!I think the 4th gen Surf/4Runner is a beautiful looking vehicle.

All down to how the customer gets treated here and in the US. In the US they take the "customer always right" motto very seriously. Also the customers are very demanding and the competition is fierce in the US.

I don't really mind there won't be a U.K version
as I have always felt the U.k 4Runner was poor in comparison to the options available on Jap Hi-lux Surfs
so once again I will be looking forward to the time we can get these as Jap Imports

They are on sale in Japan so they are being made right hand drive - I suppose some del boy type will import them, and the rest of us can put our money up and buy one.

The current 4Runner is based on a LandCruiser Prado chassis isn't it?

So, 4Runner Chassis = LCPrado Chassis = FJCruiser Chassis = vastly reduced development costs for Toyota.

Even of they only came in Left-Hand Drive, I'd still want one.

Just worked out a guestimate on import costs from US: £17.5k including transport, duty and VAT, but not including the SVA.

The Citroën's up for replacement this year, but I think £17.5k is a little more than I'll get at trade-in. Who'll give me £10k for a 3rdGen?
