Is PTFE tape okay to use for sealing diesel and oil fittings?

    Cheers,

    Matt

Short term it will do, but I have found the oil will leach through - hermatite red or plumbers merchants will sell you a small tub of sealant for oil (home heating 28sec is close to dino

I believe it is the viscosity rating.....home heating oil.......kerosine.....parafin , not reccomended for diesel engines + if you get caught using it - say goodbye to your motor

hi mate if you required a jointing compound for heating oils the us of a product called stag is preferred it is also red in colour and does not set hard but PTFE is still widely used the main problem will be that most heating systems run on a gravity feed so there is very little pressure to deal with unlike the pressures present in the fuel system.

28 sec is actually the result of a viscosity testing method for different grades of fuel... A glass sheet of specific length and approach angle is used to measure the time it takes for an amount of kerosene to reach the bottom... diesel is actually 35 sec if i remember right...next you have light medium and heavy black oil, then tar...

                  I used to deliver fuel..

Full of usless s**t me ... lol

Oh and defo dont put 28 sec in your car...its chemical makeup is completely different. Dont even add castrol GTX or cooking oil to it thinking your bein smart...

Would you put petrol on your cornflakes ???? ...no....right.... its for similar reasons...

I thought it was the time it took to empty a given sized cup through a given sized hole in the bottom???

As an aside I'm going on a short cruise on the QE2 soon. Reading up on the old boat she runs on some mad stuff called bunker oil which is like tarmac at room temp and needs to be heated to 140 oC to make it useable! It does 50ft to the gallon on it.....maybe I wont moan about the surf's thirst anymore.
Parts of your engine go up, stop then go back! Mm!

QEII, i have repaired the car lifts on that ship, they are something else. when they get down to the cargo bay they actually turn aswell for unloading, an amazing sight to watch, but unfortunately as a passenger on there you wont be able to see it. Have a nice cruise though mate.
