  • sat nav in the usa... any help much appreciated

    hey all,

    im looking to buy a sat nav system i can use in the uk as well as florida, seen a bargain on medionshop.co.uk, and seen some discs on ebay with the maps and other software on them, but i know sod all about this stuff. so does anybody know if i can change the software to the dodgy stuff from ebay???

      Tomtom is the best of the sat navs plus you can buy the extra maps that cover the US

        get a tom tom 700 , they will cover where you want to go with an extra download. iv got one and its great

          you can change the memory card, make sure you get the unlock code
          got a garmin and the ferker froze when i went to get my surf today
          would'nt really rate em tried tom tom ,navman , and garmin all have faults

            extra software for tom tom is 200 quids.. and call me mean but i aint paying that for 2 weeks lol, looking at the pda route because there is some <cough> interesting software on ebay that looks like it will do the job, but dont know what kind of pda i will need??

              You will need to get a larger memory card for the PDA, first thing I did when I got mine was to get a 1GB card and copy all from the original to it.

              These days you can pick up a card that size for around £20

                Go for the Medion It is actually a PDA I put TomTom 5 on my dad's Medion PDA recently and it was very straightforward. The only thing that you can really mess up is the GPS connection and Baud rate settings.

                I can't remember which ones I used, but a quick google suggests:

                Other Cable NMEA GPS
                GPS baud rate = 4800
                Serial Cable on SP2.

                    I have the Medion, it also runs Memory Map - GREAT for green laneing

                    It has similar settings to the Tom Tom ones you list but it goes to COM1
